I came across this artical about genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and part of is talks about how a team of Chinese researchers are using cloning technology to make cows that can produce breastmilk similar in composition to human milk. Thoughts?

Personally the idea is not for me. I choose to breastfed to give my child the most natural and pure nourishment I could. I've continued to breastfeed dispute our food allergy struggles for the same reasons. We also choose to give organic homemade babygoods, again with the same thinking behind it. The idea of genetically modifining a cow to produce breastmilk could not be further from those reasons in my opinion, but others might be fine with it.

My initial response is that it is really messed up. I feel like we need to get back to nature and back to basics in order to be healthy.

Its interesting but there's more than just a few things that are different. A big thing that makes cow milk different is the composition of fats to sugars and the size of the protein and they're not changing either of those. It's a bit odd that they chose lysozyme as one of their examples. It's an enzyme that's already in cows milk.
One of my biggest problems with GMOs is the misinformation they use to advertise. I don't see something all that wrong with mixing and matching genes, it's just so far it hasn't been done in a productive way. Like Monsanto has just made it so you can spray the crap out of soybeans with pesticides without them dying. So I try to avoid any but organic soybeans because I just don't think pesticides are that healthy to ingest.

Gross. What's up with people trying to develop unnatural things!

@chopsuey119: my thoughts exactly but I didn't want to come right out and say it. Gross!

I can definitely see a good purpose for this working in NICU, I have seen so many babies that can't tolerate formula, and only tolerate breastmilk, and whose Mom's can't keep up with the babies demand (this is pretty common actually with premature babies), the babies gut can get a lot of damage during the wait time for Mom to work on her supply, and we don't have a milk bank here. If we had a human-analogue breastmilk that we could give these kids as a short term solution while Moms work on their milk supply it would help these kids so much! Right now we are having this problem with 4 different kids in our NICU (2 sets of twins have this issue). I see it as an alternative to formula for people who can't breastfeed/have milk supply issues/have no access to milk banks.
