We only use one when he's sick and sometimes when we're forced to turn on the heat (which isn't often). We always keep the door shut. When he's sick, we keep it cranked up to get the room nice and moist and when the heater's on, we just keep it on low, which doesn't make the room feel too much different, but does help with the dryness. And ours is on a wood bookshelf with a washcloth underneath.

We shut her door and have it on a book shelf.

I always shut the door and used a low/medium setting. I put it on a hard plastic placemat from Target.

Never thought about shutting the door; I should start doing that!

@coacheswife123: I've always wondered the same thing about what surface you are supposed to put it on. We put LO's humidifier on the metal radiator cover in his room.

I just put ours on the rug..oh well. It is the cheap Vicks one and the directions didn't say no rugs, just some other surfaces. Unfortunately there's no level setting so I do close her door but crack her window, turn the fan on low or eventually open her door when she is asleep. Otherwise it looks like a rainforest in there

We do empty & refill every night.
