We went to a Target when we were in California recently, and it just seemed ok. What is the source of its magical powers??
What makes Target so awesome and hard to leave without spending money?

Yeah, me neither. Some people love the clothes, but the ones near me are horrible!

I think it only exerts its magic over a select group. Maybe we have immunity? Maybe they could come up with a vaccine? I will admit that having to drive one hour each way kind of kills it for me, anyhow, but I was never that jazzed about Target even when I had one close to me.

For us, it's a one stop shop. We are able to get LO's medications, groceries, clothes, diapers, household items, pet items, ect. without a lot of additional stops!

Lol! I don't go gaga over target either. Lately I've been going almost weekly bc it's a 3 min walk and I seem to suddenly need a lot of household items.
I do like how it's always so clean and organized.
I can find almost everything I need there too.

The dollar section does it for me. And the fact that they have everything, so when I'm walking through the store I see things and that reminds me that I needed it. The other day I went for 3 things (teddy bear, onesies, and shirt) and as I was walking through I passed the photo albums and remembered that I needed one, then I passed the decals and remembered that I wanted that too.

I also have natural immunity! Definitely better than Wal-Mart, though. The home decor stuff can be pretty cute too.

for us, there are 3 different targets each within 5-10 minutes of us making it super convenient, and it really is a one stop shop.
it's also SO easy to pick up something we didn't really need. like sometimes we leave there with ice cream even though it wasn't on our grocery list, or we see a $5 target giftcard deal if we buy two boxes of protein bars... or i walk by the cards aisle and realize that i should buy a card or two for a few upcoming birthdays/weddings...
it's just so easy to walk down an aisle and pick up something that you didn't originally go in there for!

One stop shop and you never know what you might find in the dollar section, clothes, and decorating area. I love picking up random stuff that I do not need, but want!!!!!

@LuLu Mom: Exactly!! You can get every single thing you need under one roof! Plus I have the red card

because it has everything, it's so easy and neatly displayed. it becomes the solution to every immediate need like google is the solution to every question. they make it too easy. if i need a gift, wrapping paper, a card, some TP, a dress to wear to the party, windshield wipers and something to make for dinner- i could go to 5 different places, or i could go to target because they meet all those needs and somehow they still don't seem chaotic or cluttered. then it just becomes the simple solution, 'i need something, target will have it! target always has what i need!' target habit achieved.

See, for me, Ellie is what makes shopping expensive. She needs cherry tomatoes (never mind that she would never in a million years eat them). Also, prosciutto-wrapped mozzarella. And granola bars. And cookies. I'm pretty sure she must have a copy of the 3-D hypno ring from Captain Underpants because she will ask me for five pounds of crawfish, I will buy it, and then when I get home and have to balance my checkbook and see that we spent $200 at Hy-Vee I will realize her dastardly trick.

Target is magical! You can get everything you need, clothes, diapers, food and I love their home decor stuff. Also mine has a starbucks so that's an added bonus!

I think it's all in the display. The displays sucker me in every. single. time. Plus it's way more convenient for me than Walmart (which I hate), as it's right across the road from the grocery store, so it's like one-stop shopping.

@mrs. bird: you nailed it! perfect description. love that you brought in the habit feedback loop, haha, have you read "the power of habit"?

I don't see the magic of target. We just recently got them in Canada and I was disappointed. I find that it is more expensive than other stores and the selection sucks.

@mrs. bird: I think I finally get it now! It's like Google for real life?
nectarine / 2765 posts
Like others have said, it's a one stop shop for simple grocery items, cleaning supplies, misc household items like paper towels, toilet paper, etc. I don't shop at Wal Mart so it kinda takes its place. Plus, it's clean, the employees are friendly and I swear angels sing when I walk in.

@mrbee: you got it! as i was typing it, i wasn't sure it would make sense to anyone, but i guess it does to some extent

@mrs. bird: haha you put it in terms that I could relate to!!

I don't get it because I find it overpriced. They call things clearance items when they are 15% off. Uhhh... No.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
I don't go crazy there either... but what IS nice is that it is a one-stop-shop. You can buy all the clothes you need for the whole family, your groceries, home supplies, office stuff, music/electronics, books etc- there is so much and a lot of variety and for the most part they are decent quality.
For clothes I get a lot of basics because they are cheap (like $5 tanks and $10-$20 cardigans), they have great clearance on kids/baby stuff (never pay more than $5 an item) and good coupons/sales for food. They have a decent organic section too.
So if convenience is important - it is a nice place to shop. But $$ is most important to me so we shop other places for groceries.

@mrbee: OMG best description ever. Target is google for real life.
I'm going to use that forever now. High five!

I don't think I would get excited about going to target for the first time! I also don't think I liked target so much until I became a parent. Inexpensive children's clothes, diapers, a wide variety of fruit pouches, laundry detergent? It's addicting. They have better home decor than they use to and better clothing. I wouldn't say it's magical but I do like shopping there.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
Target has lost some shine tbh because they are not pulling the cool designers like they used to. It's no longer a place to pick up a cheapie casual work item.
GOLD / pomelo / 5737 posts
It has decent quality items for good prices and is a one-stop-shop...very convenient, especially when you have a LO!

I don't love Target, if I don't need something, I do not go. Maybe once a month or less.
clementine / 957 posts
I do LOVE Target but I find better prices at Walmart. The one near us isn't bad at all and luckily it's in the same shopping center as Target! I can do home decor/clothes/etc. at Target and hop over to Walmart for the un-fun stuff that I want to save on.

I'm completely a lover. I really like there clothes (and hate spending lots of clothes), shoes, and home decor.

I puffy heart love Target. It's nicely organized, I can check out in a decent amount of time, they have everything I need (or dont need lol) etc.
cantaloupe / 6669 posts
I feel like the way the store is laid out tricks you into buying things you don't need. It's so easy to go just to get toilet paper, and then wander over to housewares, and oh, that ceramic owl is so cute...
I really believe whoever designed their store is a genius. It really feeds those addictive parts of my brain!

Three words: manufacturer coupons, Target coupons and Target Cartwheel. I save a ton! I paid $5.04 for this`stuff and you know how Target's prices are.LOL!

i often leave target without purchasing! :O... honestly tho, it's my "me-time" getaway that is open 'til 10pm, so I hop over there (2 are within 3 miles from me) after ds goes down, esp on nights that i work from home, just to get my stir craziness out !:)

I like Target for certain higher quality items but I'm not under the spell
