It's so hard because sometimes people really don't know the risks. I was recently with my cousin and she had the same Chicco KeyFit car seat as us. She had mentioned earlier in the day that her LO was 15lbs and then when she went to put LO in the car seat I noticed she still had the infant pad in there (which is supposed to be removed at 11lbs). I just casually said oh hey, the manual says you should pull that thing out after they're 11lbs. She was greatful I pointed it out as she hadn't known that. BUT... that was a situation where I could just kind of casually say something without making a production out of specifically reaching out to her just to point out a parenting mistake she made. In your situation I would probably leave it alone but it would bother me a lot.

@MsLipGloss: I agree, we all want to have our children be the safest possible, but not all of those extras are tested in order to prove they're safer ( I hope that made sense).
eta: the only car seats I think are truly "safer" are the Swedish convertibles. Those have been extensively tested and are installed differently than US seats, so for me, those are worth it.

@looch: It totally made sense! It's so hard to know what the best/right thing to do is . . . and I totally agree that (most, if not all) parents just want the absolute best for the LOs.

I am a Car Seat Technician and knowing how dangerous it is I would absolutely message her. Most moms make the mistake unknowingly and just need to be informed. It is especially concerning knowing it is a long car trip they are on. Best of luck- I know it is a tough decision.

@MamaMoose: Is having it in there for a prolonged time harmful? My son is 20lbs and ours says 15lbs, but I kind of want to keep it in there because i'm a worrywart.
