I'm sorry you're worried about this, the first trimester is such an anxiety-provoking time. I think the cramping and back pain can be totally normal at this stage and symptoms really do come and go. The endocrine system works off of checks and balances so sometimes there will be more hormones and symptoms and sometimes less.
One thing my doc said to me was that unless you're having period-like cramps in conjunction with bleeding, there is no reason to worry. Obviously, things can happen with those two occurring but it was always reassuring to me whenever I started feeling really anxious.
Hopefully it is all nothing and your first ultrasound will come quickly!

I can't honestly say just because I have never m/c'ed so I don't know what it's like but I will say that I did have cramping for the first couple weeks of my pregnancy. Also symptoms come and go frequently.

But if you feel in your gut something is wrong, I'd go ahead and give your doctor a ring, just for peace of mind.

Every pregnancy is different and symptoms can really come and go. As pps have said, if you're worried call your doctor but in all likelihood everything is fine. Try not to worry too much

@.twist.: I had something really similar last week-- I was between 4 and 5 weeks along and was woken up with strong AF like cramps. I got up and went to the bathroom fully expecting bleeding and for it to be over, but I haven't even had any spotting. It went on and off for a few days, including the lower back achiness that I get with AF. My sister told me she had the same thing and her doctor told her pretty much what @Trailmix: said-- as long as you are bleeding along with the cramping, it's probably normal.
I had pretty mild cramping for about a week after that. My boob symptoms come and go too (right now it's so bad I had to sleep in a sports bra!). I think it's all normal, but it is really freaky when it happens! I'll be 6 weeks on Monday and I'm starting to feel less like something will go wrong at any moment.

ETA: I was actually so scared that I didn't even post it on here because I couldn't bear to read anything bad about it, so it's good that you did!

The first trimester is very nerve wracking, for sure! I think I remember cramping on and off in the beginning but in my case I actually had full on red bleeding...I ended up having a perfectly healthy pregnancy and now I have a healthy and happy 3 month old daughter! Boy, was that some scary crap! I never had sore boobs once throughout pregnancy, and as far as feeling like I had to pee a lot, that didn't come until over 25 weeks! I think you will be just fine!

@.twist.: Don't feel silly! We all have been exactly where you are! I remember freaking out one day because I had so much cramping, and then freaking out the very next day because I didn't have any. Early pregnancy is just a wee bit nerve wracking. Hang in there, and call your doctor if you get to worried. They always talked me off the ledge.

I have had a MC then just conceived my DD three months later. I had lots of cramping both times. So if could mean nothing.

I had a lot of on and off cramps in weeks 4-6. Plus, I was having cramps/abdominal pain for about a week at week 11 every night after dinner. I attribute it a lot to digestion slowing down. Not a doctor obviously, but the fact that your cramps come on in the middle of the night regularly but are not constant and not accompanied by bleeding makes me think that it might be digestion related.

@.twist.: I never had nausea or vomiting! I have a healthy 8 month old now, so things went fine for me. I think if it stays that way, you're just really lucky like I was. I hope you're feeling better!

I'm glad you posted this, because this was me 5 or 6 mos ago. I had cramping and backaches and even spotting and I would work myself up into absolutely thinking the worst. I'd call my doctor and they'd be like, 'Oh - no big deal, call back if there is major bleeding but cramping and spotting is normal.' Of course I was so relieved but I was also kind of pissed! Why doesn't anyone tell us these things are normal! I feel like everything you hear before you are pregnant is that cramps/blood are automatically bad and then afterward you hear that it isn't necessarily and that sooooo many people have them in the first tri. Call your doctor and they will reassure you. Best of luck

I had cramps in the first tri, and symptoms came and went. It's ok to feel nervous, but don't worry yourself sick.

@Pirouette: I'm glad it helped. It was a really awful feeling but now I'm 25 weeks and have had zero complications. It's so strange that no one tells you about this though-- seems really common. I hope you feel better soon and can relax.

@.twist.: thank you so much!! and congrats on your healthy pregnancy! DH thought it might be gas but what concerned me was that it felt really low in my uterus as opposed to my stomach.

it's interesting that your result was constipation because (TMI) i've sort of been the opposite of constipated the past few days, but pretty gassy. i'm wondering if it is causing the same result.

I'm going to cross my fingers that's all it is and that i find out in 10 days that all is well and thank you again for making this post to begin with, because it helped me through a restless night of sleep!!

@.twist.: it does sound like it's the gas aspect that causes the pain, so that would make sense. I think i'm going to see how the next few days go, and if it happens again, i'll give the doctor a quick call to make sure I shouldn't be concerned. Thank you so much for your help!!
