We did last week and it has been a challenge. For example- we love football now we have to be home right at the start can't pause it or rewind. I am completely aware this is a first world problem. We had gone about 4 years without it before we got it hooked up (specifically for sports channels). But then it got carried away always recording things the kids were wanting to watch it too much.

Si while it is taking time to adjust to the money savings and gaining our sanity back will be worth it! And most shows you can watch on line if you miss when they are actually on!

we have never had it and honestly i rarely miss it. we do have netflix and we have several of our favorite shows (seinfeld, friends, etc.) on dvd that we watch together occasionally in the evenings.

Do you have Uverse? They just dropped $60 off my bill/month because I called and asked for a promotion.

Do it! We made this choice earlier this year and we've been very happy with it!

@dojo: Have you tried threatening to cancel? That always leads to lower rates for us. DH has a love/hate relationship with DirectTV and is always calling them threatening to cancel. We have FIOS as well.

I haven't done it but I would love to! My husband won't let me though-- because SPORTS.

But I think it would be an adjustment for a month or two. No flipping channels, no keeping up with current shows easily. But honestly between netflix and hulu and movies there is always more than enough to watch. We got rid of our cable on our two upstairs tvs and only have it in our main living space. I don't miss it on those at all.

It is a huge savings. If there are shows you really want to watch you can always stream them.

We cancelled our cable a few years ago (maybe 3?) And it wasn't that difficult to adjust. We do still get a few free channels we can "browse" when the urge hits, but otherwise we watch everything on Netflix or the computer. We don't watch a lot of tv anyway, so it wasn't a big deal.

We cancelled cable we only get one channel. We have Netflix and Amazon Prime and those are more than enough for us. We both WOH. If I stayed home I might need cable just so I didn't have to watch Kathie Lee and Hoda during naptime if I want to watch TV. I hope our new place gets more than one channel on antenna.

We've been without it for over a year and it's fabulous. The only thing we (DH) misses is sports, but of there's a game we really want to watch we go over to a friend's house or to the sports bar. We also don't have Hulu/Netflix. With work, social events and housework, we just don't have time for TV.

@dojo: my husband has been doing most of the research, but I think Hulu would be for watching shows that are on now, because they post them shortly after they air, and then the other two would be for watching older stuff? Although we just figured out that our tv in the living room can connect wirelessly to the Internet so I guess then we could just watch current shows through the network websites (abc.com, etc) and wouldn't need Hulu.

I'm thinking about cancelling after football season. Bunny ears don't work around here!

We don't have it, but we've also never had it.

We have use Flatwave to get basic cable channels and it's great: http://www.winegard.com/get-free-tv/why-flatwave/

Then we have Netflix and hulu.

At first it was an adjustment, but I'll never go back! If there is a big game on we watch it at friend's or family's, which is more fun anyway. Sometimes we pay for Netflix.

If you have Aereo in your area you can still tune in once and a while to watch things/sports.

We tried to cancel our cable and land line and just keep our cable Internet and it was such a pain. It was so expensive to just keep the wifi that it ended up being cheaper to just keep the bundle and we got rid of DVR.

Hubs wanted it gone (because we could do Aereo for sports, or go to a friends) but I would have missed it - I like it as background noise sometimes (I listen to music all day at work)

@dojo: We went 3 years without cable, and it was totally fine. We do love our Apple TV. A one-time investment!! We recently got cable ... with a newborn on the way, we figured we might like some TV time when we're delirious from no sleep.
