I'm not an expert on ice dancing and twizzles but I liked Virtue and Moir's long program!

Davis/White!!
@autumnlove: Haha I swear none of them have fat anywhere!!

Virtue and Moir. I 100% believe the results were fixed and that they were not representative of the actual skating.
GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts
I think they're both fantastic, but Davis and White are such a pleasure for me to watch (so are Virtue and Moir, but just not quite as much). I think it helps that Davis and White look like they should be Disney characters, lol!
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
@lovehoneybee: Ya, both teams skated great! I love Charlie's hair and Meryl has a very unique look!
@sunny: I read a few Toronto Star opinion pieces and comments...fun!

No preference as long as they stop talking about the damn twizzles. If I could just mute the commentator chick I would be thrilled, she's super annoying

@lovehoneybee: I so agree- they could totally be Disney characters!
Davis/White! They had the wow factor.

I am totally biased because I'm from Michigan and Meryl and Charlie would come and do a guest spot in our show every year, but they are awesome amazing skaters and I'm so excited for them!
And I think most people who think something was wrong with the results don't understand how ice dancing is scored. There's very complicated details that go into scoring the technical bits. Some, like how difficult their lifts and steps were, are more straightforward. But others are hard to judge without being trained and knowing things like, for example, when they should be on an inside vs. outside edge. Virtue and Moir have been receiving a 3 out of 4 technical difficulty score nearly the entire season, while Davis and White have received the full 4 points nearly all season. And that is based on the opinion of many different judge's panels. Virtue and Moir skated great as well and both couples definitely gave it their all, but I definitely felt that Meryl and Charlie had improved the most since the last winter Olympics, easily enough to top the former gold medalists.

@lemondrop: I have been so glad that I live close to Canada because the Olympic coverage on CBC is far superior to NBC -- they show more competition/less fluff and the commentators are SO MUCH less annoying!!
As for the actual question, I think Virtue/Moir look better together, they're so chic and well-matched while Davis/White just look...not exactly comical together, I'm not sure exactly how to describe it. But I think D/W's skating is just a teeny notch above V/M right now.
pomegranate / 3791 posts
@PurplePeony: OMG the NBC coverage is sooooo annoying! I seriously hate the announcers.
GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts
@PurplePeony: I think Virtue and Moir have so much chemistry...they really sell being just madly in love with each other, and that translates well in their dancing. Davis and White strike me as two people have been dancing together their whole lives and are incredibly comfortable together, but their dances, while amazingly fun to watch, seem just a bit more technical, less emotional.
I'm not really sure why there's a controversy. Admittedly it wouldn't be the first time there was rigging, but it seems like it's not based on anything substantial, and really takes away that Davis and White are almost perfect technically, which I imagine carries a bigger weight than just how well they look together. I mean, they've won every competition for the last 22 months? To say their gold was rigged just feels to me like you're discounting that, or otherwise suggesting that it's been a scandal two years in the making.
ETA: All of that said, the only rigging I would really buy is simply that it's a sport in which some subjective judging does come into play, but I don't think that's a scandal, that's just the nature of it.
pomegranate / 3791 posts
@lovehoneybee: Yeah, that is one of the negative things...it's so easy with a race - this person was first! The end! It's tougher with things that are so subjective.

@wonderstruck: Did you watch it live or primetime? I watched the live broadcast with Tara Lipinski & Johnny Weir and I thought they were ok! I think Scott Hamilton and Sandra Bezik did prime time?
pomelo / 5220 posts
I agree @wonderstruck if you have a trained eye, there are certain differences that make the (slim) difference. That being said, they are obviously both excellent teams and super, super talented.

@autumnlove: I (much to my surprise) have grown to like Lipinski and Weir as commentators (hehehe - *taters*). They have surprised me--in a good way!--with some of their observations about the technical aspects of jumps/spins!
ETA: Oh, and my vote is for Davis & White!
persimmon / 1363 posts
Virtue and Moir 4 life, even though I think that Davis and White might be slightly technically better. Virtue and Moir are so perfectly matched and so beautiful together - a huge pleasure to watch. I think Davis and White look weird together.

I think we should all have to put our citizenship after who we pick
Virtue/Moir for sure. The other two don't even look real and any time they show personality it seems fake!
pomegranate / 3895 posts
Virtue/Moir.....they're from where I live!!!
And I'm actually hating both NBC's and CBC's coverage. Seriously worst Olympic coverage I've ever seen. I think the time change just makes it extra awkward this time.
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
@MsLipGloss: Me tooo! I wonder if prime time is ready for Weir?! I liked how they didn't talk a lot during routines!
@Beebug: I'm from the USA!

@lovehoneybee: Yes! She looks like Jasmine.
And can I just vote for twizzle? I love saying that word.
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@autumnlove: Prime Time is definitely not ready for full on JW (with the lace *cami* and the gauzy floral pin!) . . . but I think he's ready for prime time! ;P
ETA: I give JW two thumbs up . . . waaaaay up! I also like TL, although she could do with an accessory edit!
pomegranate / 3791 posts
@autumnlove: I've been watching primetime for the most part, and I'm honestly not even sure what the commentator's names are, I'll have to look it up, but it's not Scott Hamilton. It's annoying people who talk over everything with not at all expert-sounding commentary. I should just record the live broadcast if we get that here too, because I bet Lipinski and Wier are awesome at it, haha! I've seen clips of them and it looked pretty fabulous.
@Beebug: Hey, I totally admit that I'm biased based on knowing Charlie and Meryl and thinking they're awesome. And as someone who has known them in real life, they are definitely not fake!
grapefruit / 4731 posts
Sort of tangent topic here : Does anyone else think Meryl smile is super huge? I mean it's cute... but at the same time makes me think it's not normal. Hubs said it's because it too big for her face. Just wondering if anyone else thought this.
pomegranate / 3791 posts
@Raindrop: As someone who knows her personally...I think that's kind of mean. The show makeup definitely accentuates her smile, but I don't think it looks weird.
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
@Raindrop: I think she has a great smile!
@MsLipGloss: my favorites!
persimmon / 1361 posts
I like Virtue/Moir better. I'm more entertained by their performances! I was still routing for Davis/White because I'm an American, but I think the other couple is so cute and I like their dancing style better personally!
pomegranate / 3791 posts
Man, I've always thought Virtue/Moir seemed nice too, but not so much now that I've read this article...seriously, bitter much? They're basically bashing their coach (for those who don't know, David/White and Virtue/Moir train at the same rink and have the same coach) and saying they don't think she's in their corner and that they told her they wouldn't be happy with silver, that they didn't like the music she had them using, they weren't happy with her coaching, etc. Seems fairly petty/jealous to me considering that they were plenty happy with her coaching and didn't feel there was any preferential treatment when they won gold 4 years ago with the same exact coach and training location! If they weren't happy with her they should have fired her and hired a different coach, not waited until after the Olympics and whined to the reporters about it. In the past (you know, when they were the ones who won gold) they've always said having the same coach is no problem and that they're all friends...now that they didn't win they don't feel that way anymore. Very professional.

I definitely think V/M have a more dancelike quality to them, but D/W definitely had the technical pieces down.
@petunia354: I love twizzle! I have been trying to drop it in to casual conversation, lol.
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
So, I rewatched both programs a few times . . . I am still solidly in the D/W camp. To me, V/M skated as if they had already won . . . and it was a bit boring. D/W skated like they wanted to win . . . and there was just more fire and speed during their performance (not to mention softer knees and deeper edges).
And for you conspiracy theorists, D/W have beaten V/M at the last 4 competitions in which they were both competing. I don't think there was any conspiracy here . . . just one heck of a great competition!
