I would have better prepared myself for my current career. I would have majored in foreign languages and learned at least 3. and then pursued a master in translation/interpretation.

I would have picked the same, Finance.
Where I went to school, you had to complete a core curriculum. Then in the school of management, they had their additional core. I thought it sucked at the time, because you don't have a lot of options to pursue electives, but in the end, it helped me make a decision based on fact and exposure.

@Tanjowen: @Mrs. High Heels: I have been shadowing in occupational therapy and taking pre-requisites in case it's what I want to get my masters in. Still unsure, though.
Man, I don't know. So far, a major in chemistry has served me well. I also have a masters in engineering. I'm still not sure what I want to do with my life but you just can't go wrong with a firm base in science. I'm still figuring it out!

@Arden: Thats what I want to do. Im going to nursing school and then I want to get my Masters and become a CNM.... let's hope Missouri gets its shit together before then. haha

Career wise I'd stick with what I have, which is Commerce. Interests wise, probably Business Admin or Fashion.

The same (graphic design), but I will triple major in computer arts (3D) and illustration, maybe fashion design too. what the heck. lol

My interests and needs have changed quite a bit. I studied Hospitality Management and Parks & Recreation Management. Instead I would have either gone to school for elementary education or Biobehavioral Health. Oh well.

I should have done Spanish and something else like History (I went to a liberal arts school), so that I would be fluent and gone into the Foreign Service like I intended when I was a teenager.
I think grad school was more life altering for me. I think I would have done and MBA with a real estate focus or Masters in Real Estate coupled with Masters in Urban Planning or Masters in Public Policy instead of a JD.

I'm happy with my social work degrees (bachelors and masters) but if I could go back I would definitely have found a way to double major in business, rather than sociology. With my current career path, I'd really benefit (practically and financially) from knowing a lot more about the business world and management.

I love my job as a teacher and now literacy coach, but if I could do it all again I would have pursued speech therapy. I still think about going back to school for it.

@Emsmems: i thought that was interesting too!
@loveisstrange: I was under the impression that now to practice as a practitioner, you need a doctorate of nursing? I had wanted to become a CNP, but decided that if I need to get a doctorate to do so, I probably wouldn't want that much more school now with a family.

I wish I would have stuck with my original major - Criminal Justice. I wanted to get my degree then go through the police academy and become an officer. But I let my boyfriend at the time talk me out of it and majored in Accounting and Information Systems instead.

Still education with a concentration in child psychology

@JennyG: i am thinking about getting a masters in this as well

I would have to myself to stick with nursing, I switched after 2 semesters to marketing because it was "easier."
Such stupid 18 year old college kid move who partied too much!!

Meteorology. Sigh. I wouldn't have met my husband though, so maybe Geography and get my masters in Atmospheric Science?

more business/marketing focused. my major was economics but it was more geared toward accounting rather than business.

@blackbird: That's awesome you are shadowing! What do you think so far? The only program in our state is almost 3 hours away, unless I do it online I guess (if that's even an option).
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@Tanjowen: Oh man. Well online's not an option from what i understand for your MS because there's too much hands on training. I've disliked the two areas I've shadowed so far--traumatic brain injuries for kids and a stroke ward. I spent an hour watching an OT tell someone how to put pants and a shirt on. I don't think that particular position was as dynamic as I was hoping. It was just...boring. Same thing. All. Day. My problem is that lots of jobs SOUND interesting and the field is interesting but I want to see what the actual day-to-day is.

I would have stuck with my original major (Microbiology) because I didn't really need anything more specific than that to do what I do now. It got me all my pre-reqs without having to deal with the cutthroat blonde pre-meds who were in it to become "like, pediatric neurosurgeons!"
But I would have definitely put in more effort and double majored in a language to work on fluency.

@blackbird: That's my biggest advice when a student asks me what they should do. I tell them to understand the most boring, mundane, day to day aspect of the job, and decide if they still like it enough to pursue. Work is work. I'm pretty sure the only people who absolutely love what they do all day are extremely rich philanthropists. Alas, I did not pick the right major for that!
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@Espion: Yeah it's really important. I find so many things interesting....but what i'm struggling to find is something I like doing all day every day. Engineering is interesting! But it's kind of boring when you just sit at a desk all day. OT is interesting! Except not when you're just doing pants and shirts and shoes all day. I'm having a hard time finding something as dynamic as I need, I think. Sigh. I'll find it eventually!

Nursing. Nursing. Nursing.
Instead, I thought psychology was an awesome idea. And now all I've diagnosed is my husband lol..

I doubled in English and Psych and I would do it all over again! The Psych has had the most lasting impact on my life and my teaching...and I teach English, so that was pretty integral too.

@mrspen: I'm not sure about percentages but the programs in my area are very competitive from what I hear. I'm applying to a BSN program and when I met with the advisor, I was told that I needed to have at the very least a 3.8 in pre-reqs to even qualify to be "looked at". I do however get what they call a "bump" for already having a Bachelors degree.
I intend on applying in the fall of 2015 to start in the fall of 2016. I'm baking baby #2 right now and I still have to wrap up Anatomy and Physiology II and Microbiology before I can apply.
I'm applying to a public school and two private schools since I don't really have the option to move out of the city/state.
Are you loving nursing school??
coconut / 8430 posts
So interesting that so many people would go back and go into nursing! Anyone care to share why?
pineapple / 12526 posts
@Mrs. Pen: A CNM is just a master's. I actually thinking about going the nurse anesthetist route instead, since missouri is not midwifery friendly. At least here, thats also just a master's but requires several years of acute care experience as an RN first. Maybe it's dependent on the state you live in?
persimmon / 1178 posts
@blackbird: have you considered using your interests in engineering and OT to work for a company that develops enabling devices and whatnot? No idea how one breaks into that field, but I have had the opportunity to work with people who benefited from people with that job. For example, I had a little girl in a wheelchair and it wasn't working for her needs and people came and jerry rigged it to be what she needed. It was awesome.
nectarine / 2521 posts
@blackbird: I was afraid the online wasn't an option. Maybe one day if we move there will be a school closer where I can shadow. It's good to know the nuts and bolts of it though from someone who's been there and I'm not sure how I would do with the mundane aspect. My last (and now part-time job) is in the court system, so there is ALWAYS drama and different situations going on!
pomelo / 5093 posts
That is so hard. I doubled in two difficult subjects (molecular biology and Russian), and I wasn't able to be an A student in both. I would have gotten far more out of either of them if I'd just picked one to focus on. And yet, the experiences I had in each were so, so valuable. I guess I wouldn't change anything, except to maybe take more time with it.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@loveisstrange: ah okay. I wasn't sure if the CNM route required a doctorate now or not.. So probably just the CNP route. I think CRNA's are still just masters programs too. CRNA's make a butt load of money but I'm not sure I'd love the day to day on that one.
That's a bummer about midwifery laws in MO change! They're pretty good here.
@Blueberry: yikes! That's competitive. There was no set required GPA for my program, but they rank you and other applicants based on GPA of only four core classes and then the TEAS score (nursing prep exam). I know for sure no one with less than a 3.5 got in, and 75 seemed to be the minimum for TEAS.
I do love nursing school but only four weeks in and already intense! I try to remember to enjoy it though too. Good luck and let me know how it goes
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@lizzywiz: I have thought about this but wasn't sure how to bring my background together with that. Or what company does that. I'm in brainstorm mode, though
@Tanjowen: definirely do some shadowing!

Hmmm not sure. I have a good job with a fancy sounding title in my field now, (Criminology) so I guess it worked out all right in the end, but maybe something that didn't mean I pretty much HAVE to work for the government, or for no money in private industry.
Maybe accounting.

Graphic design....
I was business marketing because I thought it would be more practical but now I know I should have followed my artsy dreams and done design!
I don't think it's too late though.....I'm a SAHM now and would live to go back to school once LO goes to school!
