When did you feel comfortable starting your lo on some harder foods than purees? What were the first real foods you gave them?

Good thread! We will be doing purees bc BLW just isn't for us, so I'm interested to hear some answers!

@Bao: I'm also going to ask my pediatrician about this at her 6 month appointment. I'll try to update after that, too.

I started my son on purees at around 6 months. I'm gonna try purees with my daughter at 5 months though. At her 4 month check up, the ped said she thought she was ready for purees.

Do they have to have teeth before they can move on from purees? We do purees now but LO often would rather have what I'm eating than boring old purees (she LOVES roasted garlic pasta sauce and sucking on a piece of chicken haha) but she doesn't have teeth so I'm hesitant to give her anything else.

great post - I'm curious about this too! My son likes purees but I'm not sure when to add more texture - so far at 6.5 months, he has spit out any accidental small chunks that I've left in his puree...

I keep forgetting to ask my pediatrician about this, but a lot of my friends have said they started finger foods (like puffs) around 7-8 months. I think they don't necessarily need teeth, but need to start using the chewing action while eating purees. I could be totally wrong about that.

We started offering puffs and really small pieces of muffin around 9-10 months. We moved on from there with small soft fruit, eggs, etc. around 10-11 months.

I wanted to do a BLW approach, but my baby wanted solids way before that was doable. So, I started her on chunky purees and yogurts. Pretty soon I moved to smashed up fruits, and just slowly started smashing them less.
My daughter had a couple of growth spurts where I'd notice that she all of the sudden had far better tongue control. Each time that happened I'd try more texture, and she was always fine with it.
