...but ended up getting one anyway, are you going to attempt without one for #2 or get an epi much earlier in the process?

I was undecided with number one but will definitely get one for number two. I'm not sure if I'll get it earlier or not...

I'm going to try to withhold!
I did not want one for #1 but got it fairly early. I still don't want one for #2, but won't hesitate to get it if the pain is too unbearable again.
REALLY crossing my fingers for no back labor this time!

I was open with LO1 and ended up getting one. With LO2 I was prepared to get one, signed the forms and everything, but it all happened so fast there was simply no time! Once contractions started my whole L&D was 45 minutes!

I'm undecided. I kind of hope that labor goes so fast with #2 that I won't have an option. But if it's slow then I don't know that I'll be able to resist the epidural.

As for me, I naturally labored (back labor - ugh!) for 30 hours with DS before getting one, got it, and from then on everything was smooth sailing.
I'm still undecided for this baby and I need to figure it out ASAP!

I planned to get one with #2 but labor was so much easier until it was too late that I ended up without it.

I didn't have one for D. I ended up with an unplanned one for S. Before the c section was a sure thing for M, I planned on getting the epidural for M.

@coopsmama: I had back labor for D and S. I was hoping to not have it for S but I did anyways.

I am going to see how it goes, but I am much more open to an epidural. Unless my labor goes really quickly, I will probably get one, but I wouldn't want it until I get close to transition, I think. I guess I need to talk with my doctor some more about it,
But honestly, at this point, I'm not at all invested in my birth story or whatever.

Much earlier and for similar reasons to you - my labor went on and on with basically no progress, and as soon I got the epidural I started making tons of progress. It was awesome, I actually cried a little bit because I was so relieved!

I am going to try to hold out to increase my chances of a VBAC but I am still open to getting one, which means I almost surely will at some point unless I have a really fast or weirdly easy labor.

I'm going to try to go without for #2 - but we'll see how things go!

@coopsmama: Tomorrow!!!
I'm going to do the same as with #1. Be open. Try without first and if I need it, I need it. No biggie.

IF I decide on a VBAC and IF I even get one I would like to try med free again. I feel like if I go on my own I will have a better chance. My labor was so long and I just wanted some sleep so badly.

I'm going to attempt to go without. For #1, I had no idea how long labor was going to be and felt like I couldn't breathe because I was getting no rest between contractions. I was a 5 when I got to the hospital so I got the epidural. I had my son only 1.5 hours after the epidural was placed. Soo.. I think I can do it if labor is similar or faster.

Didnt plan on one. Was told I had to have one. Got it. Failed. Got 2 more. Both failed.
Honestly... probably wont opt for one again.

I did 13 hours of natural labor before "giving in." (And not any of this "I was pretty sure I was having contractions," stuff. I was on.the.floor in the gross hospital hallways with every single one). My doctor came in and told me she was so glad I'd gotten the epidural (she didn't want to pressure me in the decision) because it was clear my body was fighting the contractions. I immediately dilated another 5 inches (I had been stuck at 2). A nurse we'd seen that morning (we were eventually sent home, and came back when I decided that I'd get the epidural) made a point of finding my husband and telling him she was glad we got the epidural, too.
With the next, I'll try natural again, but if it's clear that I'm stalled again, I'll ask for the epidural MUCH more quickly.

IF I have another baby (big if) I think I will probably get an epidural asap for three reasons:
1) If I'm attempting a VBAC (which I'm not even sure I'd do) I am aware the risk of a c-section is higher than it was with my first birth (which ended in c section) and if I do need a c-section I would rather have the epidural already placed like it was last time. I can't imagine trying to get an epidural at 8 or 9 cm.
2) Because it would be a VBAC I'd be stuck with continuous monitoring which was a huge reason I got the epidural in the first place. Being strapped to a bed was pure torture with back labor.
3) My labor went way faster after the epidural than before it. So I don't really fear it slowing me down in the future-- which was my main concern before.

@Silva: I love how you said that you're not invested in your birth story. That perfectly sums up about how I'm feeling this go around. I hate the false expectations I unknowingly set myself up for last time but trying to be so invested and perfect at giving birth. I'm feeling a lot more confident in my decision to just go with epi after reading your comment. Thanks.
@locavore_mama: It was going to be tomorrow but we moved it to Saturday so I could have my favorite midwife! Honestly, the extra day's wait was worth it to me because I trust her unequivocally and love her personality!
