Just wondering, because I still usually rock 8.5 month old LO down to sleep - if you don't sleep train - how do they eventually learn to go to sleep on their own?

DS started to STTN on his own at 9mos. This coincided with learning to walk (within days). I think he just had too much energy and wasn't tired enough until he was walking.

Once LO found her hands at 4/4.5 months, she stopped wanting me to rock her. So she sucked on those to fall asleep.

@bushelandapeck: Thanks for sharing. That's interesting because LOs has followed that pattern somewhat. Her naps have definitely improved as she's gotten more mobile - not crawling yet but rolling/pivoting/sitting.
@birdofafeather: I kept hoping that would happen for us, and I wonder if I've just waited to long. She can self soothe but doesn't want to for falling asleep at the start of the night.

@Revel: We did a sleep consult around 8 mos and were told to stop all of the sleep associations (rocking, bouncing, falling asleep nursing) and I think that really helped too.

@bushelandapeck: Good advice I've stopped the nursing to sleep but I can't get her to go down awake. It seems like the only solution may be CIO but inaction just seems to be reigning right now.

@Revel: I sleep trained but not CIO - there are other options we rocked to sleep, too.

@scg00387: Ha, I remember our discussions about No Cry Sleep Solution before. Sometimes wrestling with baby sleep makes me feel like I'm stuck in Groundhog Day!

My LO was quite happy to put herself to sleep until we hit six months and her sleep went haywire as a result of all the development she had going on (teeth, crawling, wonder week etc). We started nursing to sleep and bedsharing as required although I had always nursed to sleep at night.
LO is now sixteen months old and is back to sometimes putting herself to sleep and almost STTN and has been making real progress with sleep since she turned fourteen months old. Miss A has never responded well to CIO so nursing to sleep has been a real sanity saver, as has my acceptance that she's just not "that" kid when it comes to sleep. I also think that the sucking action of nursing is very relaxing for her and it's her way of winding down.

I have never sleep trained/CIO and my babe puts himself to sleep at night (naps are pretty hit and miss). I used to nurse to sleep but now he doesn't fall asleep when I nurse. So I put him in his crib and he usually kicks and rolls around for 5-10 mins before falling asleep.
I think for us the trick is that he's really tired but not overtired. My babe is 8 months+1 week and I aim to put him down 3 hours after he wakes up from his second nap. Sometimes it's super early (5:30 or 5:45) but I figure it's because he has recently transitioned from 3 naps to 2 naps and his awake times still aren't super long.

I sleep trained my first but haven't done so with my second. I typically nursed to sleep in the early weeks. Then I had him make sleep associations with nap times following EASY. It took about two weeks before he made the connection with naps and being inside his crib. He also figured out how to self soothe by sucking on his fingers. At bedtime I still nurse him to sleep, which I don't mind.
