Just wondering how long it usually takes your LO to go down for their nap. My LO is 8.5 months old now, and it's a hit-or-miss. I usually put him down for naps every 3 hours, or even a little sooner when I notice that he is rubbing his eyes/yawning or particularly fussy for no reason. I do rely heavily on the three-hour mark though. Sometimes, he goes down beautifully, and sometimes, he plays around in the crib for up to half an hour! I wonder if I'm wasting precious time that I should be spending with him while he is awake, but I'm always afraid of him become overtired.

If I time it right, it's within 5 mins. Other times its much crying and a lot later!

He's always fallen asleep super fast...like, by the time I am downstairs and turn on the video monitor. The crazy thing is that he goes from crazy squealing and playing to conked out. He shows no sleepy signs whatsoever and if I followed his cues he'd never sleep!
@cranberryapple: if your LO is consistently taking 30 minutes to fall asleep then I'd maybe meet in the middle and put him down 15 minutes later. Are his naps long or short? Does he wake up happy or crying?

Usually 5 minutes of rolling around/chewing on something. If he's crying I'll let him go for 10 minutes. If he's standing up and crying after 10 I'll take him out and try again in half an hour. If he's not crying but is just playing I'll usually just let him play. While I don't necessarily want him to see his crib as a play-place I do want it to be somewhere he feels safe and comfortable where he enjoys spending time...so i don't feel bad about letting him be in there awake for a while. Most of the time he's asleep within 5 minutes.

@Sammyfab: How old is your LO and how long do you let him stay awake?
I mostly give him an extra 15 minutes of awake time. He naps twice a day, for 1.5 hours each. Or, if one nap is shorter, he tends to make up for it with the other. He usually wakes up happy, and when he does wake up crying, it's usually the afternoon nap.

At around 9 months if I timed it right (about 2.5 hours from last wake time), DD would fall asleep within 5 minutes. Some days she'd still roll around or walk around her crib for up to 30 minutes but I leave her there if she isn't complaining and she eventually falls asleep. Now at 14 months we put DD down every 3-3.5 hours depending on her activity level and she's usually asleep within 5 minutes. She started walking a few weeks ago and runs everywhere, so I think she's just completely wiped out when nap time comes around.

5-10 minutes. I go by the clock, not cues. Those stopped being reliable around 6 months. But some days he'll play for 30 minutes before giving in. As long as he's happy, it's all good. If he's crying, I've waited too long.

If he's showing signs of tiredness, it's usually no more than 5 mins before he's snoozing. He's a little over 8 months old

5-10 minutes on good days. On others, he'll play in his crib for a half hour before finally dozing off. I agree that the tired signals are unreliable after 6 months. Last night for bedtime, he got super cranky. Once he was in the crib, he fell asleep within 10 minutes with a little time to give his lovey some love.

Anywhere from 15-25 min. He's 9 weeks so he'll tired-fuss and yawn while I rock him. I'm hoping he gets better at falling asleep on his own as time passes. I keep him awake anywhere from 50 min to an hour.

Mine is also like @Sammyfab: where she'll be full on playing, but i drag her up to nap. Within minutes she's asleep.
I don't think it's a bad thing if he's playing in the crib. Quiet time still counts.
