We are careful, but not *that* careful. I would say that if you aren't using tons of salt in everything, and you eliminate it in baby's foods where you can (for ex. anything that you would "salt to taste" at the end of cooking, reserve a portion for baby that is unsalted and do what you want to the rest) you should be fine. Obviously you need to pay some attention, but some salt is not the end of the world. Also, baby might well be getting less salt in home-cooked healthy meals than in eating processed "toddler" foods, etc. Just a thought. Our baby will be one year in a couple of weeks, and she has been eating what we eat with some minor salt modifications since she was 6 months and we have not had any issues.

I don't add salt to anything and if we are eating something bad that's high in sodium, I just don't feed it to her. DH and I add salt later to our plates if we want to.

I've never worried about it. I season everything normally while cooking and if we add salt later, I give him some first before I add it to my own food.

@betsyboop: How old is your LO? I give tastes here and there. Like i've given her bites at dim sum, but i don't give her lots because i'm not sure about how much MSG is in there. I became a lot more lax around 9-10 months because she was eating a great variety of foods and drinking lots of water.

I still think that restaurants season food a lot more heavily than we do at home (that's why it tastes sooo good) so that's really the only area where i exercise a little more caution. You could always "rinse" the food in a bit of water before giving it to your LO.

I don't add salt to foods I plan to give DD, so if anyone else wants salt they have to use the saltshaker. If we go out to eat, I don't stress about it too much or I'll be more selective with what I order, but we definitely limit the intake if we're eating at home.
