would you try for a med free for #2?
I'm undecided! I tried to go epi free for #1 but I couldn't take it!

@runsyellowlites: You did like you got a epi for #1 then went epi free for #2?
GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts
Well, I had to be induced, so I'm curious to see what natural labor feels like. So, I'll probably go in with the same attitude as the first..."we'll see!"

I'm undecided too... I got scared of the unknown and went ahead and got the epi even though I had wanted to try to go med free. It didn't stall my labor and I had no complications. So I kind of want to try med free for #2, but I'm struggling with why when I really start to think about it. Just to say I did it?

I tried and I think I could have done it without the epidural with #2 had I not needed pitocin.

I have no idea. I went a good chunk of my labor without one...enough to make me think I could go completely med-free (although I was do grateful to be able to rest). But I had back labor and have no idea how I might tolerate normal labor. I hope I'd be pretty go with the flow, which is what I did last time.

Yes, I plan to go med free for my next birth. But I had planned on having a med free water birth in a birthing center for my 1st and that obviously didn't go as planned.

I'm definitely gonna try. I wanted to have DS med free, but I ended up with a bladder infection and he was pressed against my bladder so every time I had a contraction or felt like I was giving birth to a baby vampire (he actually pushed out my catheter a few times). It was INSANE. I'll definitely try again!

I did. I had an epi at 9 cm with my first, and then with my second, everything was so fast I had no option for one. So med free it was!

I planned for a med-free birth with #1 and ended up with an epidural. I thought I'd try again with #2, but I had an episode of pre-term labor at about 28 weeks that reminded me why I got the epi the first time! After that I just decided I would go as long as I could before getting the epidural with #2. Right after I got it, my doctor checked and I was 6 cms; I was proud of holding out that long!

@regberadaisy: I had stadol & an epi during my labor with G (hated both & we know the outcome I had)... went zero intervention with P (well I did get a heplock at the hospital but no fluids).
I really put epi's with all other medical intervention... time & a place for them but the risks outweigh the benefits in most all cases. I just couldn't even entertain the idea with all that was put into me having a successful vbac.

Yes! I only caved on epi because I was in labor for soooo long and so tired. Hoping the next baby comes a little faster and a med free birth is possible

Ok, I'm backwards a little. I had no epidural with DS and did fine. With S, I ended up having one, and it was so relieving, so now I think with the next one, I will be planning on it!

I intended to go med free but was induced and got an epidural bc I wasn't dilating after 10 hours of pitocin which ended in a c-section. I thought I was handling it pretty well considering how everyone says pitocin contractions are so much worse. I hope I will get to find out someday what natural contractions feel like.

@Navy_Mommy: Ugh the catheter. I will do anything to avoid that thing next go around. That was the worst part for me.
GOLD / pomelo / 5737 posts
I don't know! I made it to 8 cm before even getting admitted to the hospital so I think maybe I could make it? I guess in certain cases you just don't even get a choice and you have to make it! But I did have a pretty pleasant pushing experience since I didn't have to feel the ring of fire!!

@regberadaisy: NO WAY! I see no reason to not take something that is available to help relieve my pain if it's safe and worked great the first time.

@luckypenny: That's my plan too- I'd thought about trying to go med-free with #1, but my water broke at 10:30 PM and after another 10 hours, my doula even agreed with my that it was better to get the epi, rest a bit, and then be able to push a baby out, than end up totally exhausted and unable to push.
I'm hoping that next time I go into labor better rested, and that it all goes faster- in that case I think I could do it!

I had an epi the first time and went med free the second time. My epu gave me terrible back pains and I didn't wanna deal with that again. But my first was back labor and if I had dealt with that the second time I might have caved. Lol. Back labor suuuucks.

I'll try to wait for the epidural because it did have it's side effects but I was ready for it and think I would be again if my labor is the same. But the side effects made me happy that I put off getting one and make me want to at least wait again.

Yes....I will try.
With my first, I didn't even INTEND on trying. I knew I wanted an epi and I asked for it the minute I got to the hospital.
Next time, I will absolutely try to go without. But, I am
banking on the fact that 2nd labors are usually quicker.
My first labor was 8h. So, if my second if even shorter, I think I can do it.
I loved my epi but, I just feel like, if I can do without, then I don't need the unnecessary intervention.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
No I need that epi. Mine ended up failing and it was torture, but it helped in the beginning.
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
heck no. I labored med free, and I am so glad I got the epi just in time and didn't have to feel her coming out. no offense to anyone. lol.

nooooooo way. my labor with charlie was the most pain i was in my entire life. viva la epidural!
grapefruit / 4120 posts
I did it this way.
@kiddosc: I could have written this a few months ago. I didn't want an epi the first time but I just FREAKED when I was at 9 cm and almost ready to push.
Going without the second time was definitely all about ME -- to show myself and the world I could do it. I admit it As I've said here before, my unmedicated second birth was cool and all, but I think I had super high expectations of it being a life-changing experience (more so than a medicated birth) and it wasn't really. BUT I never would have known and I always would have wondered! Also my recovery the first time was fast and the second time was superfast!!

hahah.... i got an epi at around 9.5+ cm for LO#1 and it was my besssttt friend! <3!
i won't say no to an epi this time around, but he might come shooting out before it can happen.... LO#1's labour was pretty short, too -- so i can only imagine how short this second one could be! we'll see!

@kiddosc: I feel the same way...like what am I trying to prove by going med free? I had a great epi experience so I think I will probably get it again.
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
I'm getting the epi again. I go through enough pain in my life, I don't need more.
honeydew / 7091 posts
I will try to go med free, but I won't beat myself up if I give in again. I had hoooorrible back labor with DD, so I'm hoping I'll have a better shot at it with #2
pomegranate / 3438 posts
I didn't get my epi until 7cm. I've considered going med free with the next one now that I know what to expect. The only thing that frightens me is that I had a forceps delivery, not sure I could handle that without an epi! I will definitely be looking into more pain management techniques and requesting that I not have continuous monitoring unless absolutely necessary. Laboring in bed was not fun for me!
nectarine / 2797 posts
I had an epi with LO, but would like to try and go med-free next time. I wish I had prepared better for LO's birth and taken some classes, I got stuck when I felt like I was trapped on the bed and couldn't move around to deal with the pain.

NO!
I didn't feel anything once I got the epidural and have no complaints about my labor because of it.
nectarine / 2458 posts
@highwire: my bladder infection was so bad the catheter was actual a relief. I filled two bags almost instantly. When getting a catheter feels GOOD you know something is wrong, lol.
