We did CIO just to go down for bed and naps. Haven't done it for motn wake ups though (LO is 6 months)! He did much better than I thought he would!

CIO with no checks. Night one was awful. Every night sense has been amazing. Now he asks for his bed !

CIO with no checks. I knew that if he saw me and I didn't pick him up, he would NOT feel comforted.

We tried EVERYTHING. I think it was a progression - we did No Cry Sleep Solution, then Sleep Lady. He got better but still didn't sleep more than 3 hours straight, so we did extinction and it took 7 minutes on night 1, and it just clicked from there. I don't think it would have had we not done the other two first.

CIO with checks - loosely based on the Ferber structure I found online.

If we have to again for LO #2 I'll probably walk out and evaluate instead of hovering nearby at first. Now I know he will sometimes yell once then pass out. But it was great! First bedtime and nap time he went into his crib happy and babbles himself to sleep it felt like we won the lotto. It truly felt like we we were working together so he could learn to fall asleep on his own. Let me know if you have any questions.

Sleep lady shuffle, and then when she was older we started doing CIO, but we always had a time limit of 15 minutes. Also, we are terrible at sleep training and our kid still struggles with sleep. So don't listen to me. Next time I will give the kid a little more space to work it out- we intervened at the tiniest peep from the start, and it it was unnecessary. I liked the sleep lady shuffle, and it helped us go from co-bedding/her being latched on my boob constantly to her sleeping in a crib in our room, and being able to put herself to sleep or stay asleep through a transfer. We will use that method again with future little ones, particularly before a year or so (which was our general time line with our daughter, too).

@Silva: I remember telling DH in the very early days, proudly, that "I got him up and nursed him before he even started crying, really!" At least I got a good milk supply out of it, LOL.

Ferber/CIO with checks at 4 months & again at 6 months. CIO with no checks/extinction for the whole night at 8 months. Greatly prefer extinction but I don't think I could have handled it when she was younger.

CIO, no checks at about 6 months I think. Worked amazingly and we now have a well rested comfortable little sleeper. I am a big believer that the earlier you do it, within reason obvs, the more successful it is.

We tried Ferber (CIO with checks) but decided after a few checks to switch to without checks. Worked very well for us at 4 months.

CIO, extinction/no checks. Worked amazingly after like 2 days.

ferber. worked wonderfully with charlie.
with olive we did no checks, but she cried for such a short time that we didn't need to do checks.

With our first , we had planned to do CIO with checks, but the first couple of times of checking just pissed him off further, so we went to extinction and it worked within 30 mins. At the time he was 4.5 months and we only did it for the putting him to sleep. He didn't have trouble staying asleep, just had issues with falling asleep (it would take us over an hour to get him to sleep). He still woke up once a night to feed and we allowed for that until about 8 months.
We were also planning on doing CIO with our second son, but at 3 months he started sleeping 5-6 hours per night with just one wake up so we didn't have to do anything.

Thread hijack: for those who did CIO without checks, do you all have a video monitor?
coconut / 8472 posts
@Ocean girl: Yes, we do. I don't think I could do any sleep training without it.
@Ash: You know your baby best. I honestly felt like it would be a worse experience for mine if me or DH were to go into his room but not pick him up.

We more or less did CIO with checks. It only really took a night or two in our case though, so it was very short-lived. Our daughter was pretty easy going, so other babies are probably more spirited.

Extinction.
@Ocean girl: Yes. However, the woman who taught the extinction video I watch said to turn it off and put it away. It just makes it harder on you. But, I figured as long as I was strict with myself, I was allowed to watch him just in case he like... threw up or shit all over everything or something.

@Ash: I think most people equate sleep training with CIO only. If you search "sleep sense" or "sleep lady shuffle" you'll find other posts if that's what you're looking for more of.

We did the sleep lady shuffle with our first. For the 2nd I did a real short version of shuffle, he was much much easier to sleep train.
