Just curious. As we move towards IVF, my husband has been absolutely freaking out about the idea of twins. He is adamant about only wanting two kids and since we have one already the chance of having two more scares the crap out of him. It scares me too but not like him. So he's dreading the decision about how many to transfer. So anyway, just curious...

We transferred 2. One embryo split into triplets, the other implanted normally. One baby did not progress past 7 weeks, so we would have had triplets, but decided to reduce the pregnancy to a singleton.
I'm a big advocate of single embryo transfer now...

We're still working on the first child so we have decide we will be transferring 2 to increase our chances. If we need IVF again for subsequent children, we will be transferring 1 at a time though. -

Transferred two resulting in a singleton. Will transfer one next time. I had a high risk pregnancy and do not want to increase the chances of having another one.

Transferred two and have twins. My sister's first FET transferred two and pregnant with one that ultimately miscarried at 10 weeks. Her second FET she transferred two and had her twins a couple days ago!
My twins are the best thing that have ever happened to me, but I strongly believe you should only transfer two if you are prepared and willing to have two!

I transferred two during an IVF was unsuccessful, but transferred two during my FET and have twins.

Transferred two, got pregnant with two but lost one around 8 weeks. I was always ok with having twins which is why we decided on 2 but once I was actually pregnant with twins the reality of all the risks, costs, ect really scared me. Now that we are having just one, we know in the future we would only transfer 1 at a time.

If your husband definitely only wants one more, I would only do single embryo transfers. You should speak with your doc about the specific stats at your clinic, but transferring two does dramatically increase the chance of twins.
I've had two single embryo transfers (both BFNs) and four double-embryo transfers (two BFPs), but no baby yet. My body's not great at getting or staying pregnant.

My husband has a twin sister and they were conceived via IVF. I believe they transferred two. I have a friend who is recently pregnant by IVF -- they also transferred two and both implanted but one didn't survive very long (she's only about eightish weeks at this point, but all is looking good with the second so far).

@travellingbee: We only transferred one when we did our IVF cycle and while it was a hard and very emotional decision. I have done a lot of reading on the increased risk of multiples (other cases like what happened to @Mrs Green Grass: ). Additionally, our clinic said that based on their statistics the only thing transferring 2 did was increase our odds of multiples. Lastly, having two would likely have meant that I would be off work earlier and the cost of day care here is over $1,800 per child making it very likely that one of us would have had to quit working. I know we would have made it work but selfishly since we had the choice we decided that one was better for us.
If your husband is apprehensive about the possibility of two you both should discuss it and speak with the RE about their recommendation.

My SIL transferred two but had triplets because one of the eggs split.

Mine might be an odd one. We did and FET and transferred 3 (to improve our chances of being 1 and done- we were hoping for twins or triplets).
2 of the embryos implanted and then went on to split. So at some point i was pregnant with Quads. Unfortunately i lost 2 of them at about 10 and 13 weeks, and we ended up with twins. -
@Apex: Oh, I didn't know you transferred 3. I would love to have twins and I wondered if my RE would think I was crazy if I suggested to transfer 3. Though the idea of quads or more is scary to me.

I've done three transfers so far:
Fresh transfer - 1 embryo - BFN
FET #1 - 2 embryos - BFP with singleton (little girl now 17 months)
FET #2 - 2 embryos - Chemical pregnancyWe are currently waiting to do FET #3 and we will again transfer 2 embryos.

@bluestriped bee: depending on your age, your rn might be ok transferring 3. But be prepared for the possibility of triplets....
While my b/g twins are indeed a handful, im grateful for them and i often wonder how I would have been able to handle 3 or 4 babies at once. -
@Apex: yeah, I don't think I convinced the DH yet, so I doubt I would suggest it to the RE just yet. Hehe.

@Apex: it's already so hard w twins. I really think it would be sooo impossibly hard with more. Especially when they are older, like toddlers and it's basically one kid per parent lol.

We did two cycles, both transferring two embryos. First transfer started as twins (we lost one twin later) and second transfer ended up singleton.
On the other hand, my friend didn't want to have twins so transferred only one embryo but it split and became identical twins! So I guess it's hard to guess....

@tequiero21: minus the one that didn't implant, I was told the remaining 2 split, so each embryo had an identical twin at some point. The one we lost at 13 wks was a girl.

We transferred two and both implanted. One split and we ended up with triplets. A singleton in its own placenta and a pair if identical twins sharing a placenta. Unfortunately we lost our twin boys to TTTS at 24 weeks. I continued my pregnancy with all three so our singleton could grow, since she was in her own placenta we were not forced to deliver at the time of their passing. I made it to 37 weeks and delivered all three babies via c-section. Our baby girl was extremely healthy and is now 2 years old.

I probably don't have any reason to be posting in here since I didn't go through IVF but two of my best friends did so I know a decent amount. One friend had one embryo transferred since everything looked good and it split into her amazing identical boys. My other friend transferred 2 and have 2 beautiful girls.

I don't have any good stats to contribute from my own experiences, since I never got pregnant in my two IVF cycles (one with 1 embryo, one with 2).
I just wanted to throw a little fact in here, since there are of course lots of anecdotal (and some IRL HB) experiences... the rate of embryo splitting in IVF is only about 3%. This study from the New England Journal of Medicine is from 2003, but it says that the rate of embryo splitting was 2.3%, which is 6 times higher than with spontaneous pregnancies. It does also note another study though, where the embryo splitting rate was 4.9% when all pregnancies (not just live births) were taken into account. http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc026724

@Shutterbug: I took a look at the link and it doesn't state whether or not ICSI was used. It seems that ICSI increases the chances of an embryo splitting.

We have now done 4 embryo transfers, here's the breakdown:
1: 2 embryos, 1 stuck (healthy baby boy)
2: 1 embryo, 0 stuck
3: 2 embryos, 1 stuck (miscarriage)
4: 2 embryos, 2 stuck (27w pregnant now!)For us, only 2 embryo transfers have worked! But also, if twins are a concern it's gone both way us

@Mrs Green Grass: i've heard that too. Ive also heard that assisted hatching can increase the odds of splitting as well. I'm sure there's been more research in the last 10 years. At least I hope so!

Twins run in her family so she sorta knew. I forget how far apart the twins are.My 3 nephews are a lot to handle. 4 is mind boggling.
