Can they identify Elmo and other characters?
My toddler doesn't get screen time yet but she gets so excited when she sees anything with Elmo on it. She also knows about some Disney princesses....they have lots of Elmo & Disney books at daycare!

Nope, she's just about 17 months and she wouldn't be able to identify any characters from shows as she's never had any deliberate screen time. She has a stuffed Winnie the Pooh and a stuffed Peter Rabbit, so she knows them by name when I ask her to go get them, but I doubt she would recognise either of them in any other context.

@Ree723: I was surprised when LO identified Cinderella on some lunch bags!

@autumnlove: Wow, that's impressive! I'm sure once my LO starts going to daycare (if she does, we're undecided about one or two mornings per week when she turns two), she will be exposed to much more of that stuff than I think she is! For now though, I get to control everything she is exposed to and I'm relishing it!

Yup, she's gone to school/daycare so she's still exposed to characters, but she might not know very many details.

Both my kids knew about those things from other contexts: mylar balloons at the grocery store, books (my mom is notorious for "character" books in the mail!), stuffed animals at the thrift store... you name it. It's amazing how ubiquitous some of that is!

We have a Elmo book and toy that someone bought her. MIL pointed Elmo out once now she knows it's Elmo!
