When did you transition from three naps to two? And how long did the transition take?
My LO is just about six months old, and there have been a few days lately where the third nap has just not happened. Or the timing is such that he'd go down for nap #3 at 5 pm, which no thanks. But I'm not ready to lose the evening nap and he isn't quite ready either.

Both LOs started the transition around that age but it probably took until 7.5 or 8 months to be solidly on two naps. Some nights I forced the evening nap with a car ride. I didn't mind him going to bed a bit later because he fought earlier bedtimes tooth and nail, and being overtired was also bad.

My daughter dropped naps early. The 3-2 transition was nebulous, but 6 or 7 months sounds about right. She dropped down to a single nap right at 1 year, and is now 2.5 years old and is only napping several days per week.

@gilmoregirl: we did around that gage. After a week of hit or miss I decided it wasn't worth the fight and stopped trying and moved bedtime to 6pm. It slowly moved back later until about 11m when he dropped to one.

@Mrs. Yoyo: interesting. We are dealing with somewhat the opposite bc the late bedtime is the one he fights. We have better luck when he's going down for the night at 6-6:30.

for both kids the 3 to 2 nap transition happened around 9 months. but i know a lot of kids do it at 6 months.
Charlie dropped to 1 nap at 15 months (we pushed it), and Olive did at 17 months (we pushed it). they both got more sleep on one nap anyway.

We started going to two naps about about 5.5 months but it took about a month to fully transition. Her ideal wake time was not any longer than the average 5/6 month olds (about 2 hours) but she would often take 2.5 hour naps, so on a good day her naps would be 9:30-12 & 2-4:30, and then bedtime would be at 6:30. (I miss those long naps!!!) She did fight early bedtime, but would be an overtired beast if we waited.
Now at 11 months I feel like she would do fine on one nap a day IF she would sleep for 2.5-3 hours. But she won't, so she definitely still needs two naps.

Around 5 months she alternated between 2 and 3 naps each day, then at 6 months I stretched her awake time between the naps a little so she just took 2. She dropped the 2nd nap at 10.5 months.

@illumina: Was she taking long naps pretty regularly when you dropped the 3rd? What you describe is pretty close to what I'm doing, but his naps aren't consistently long enough for me to make it through the last stretch of awake time, even with a very early bedtime. But if he takes one two-hour nap, I can make it work. I'm kind of hoping it will just sort itself out in the next month or two.

@gilmoregirl: I think she was taking 2x 1.5hr naps. We were roughly on a 3-3-3 schedule. Though I remember around 7 months if we were busy she would have a 1.5hr in the morning and just a 30 minute nap in the afternoon.

@gilmoregirl: Around 5-6 months is when most babies naturally start napping longer, but I wanted those long naps so bad that I worked really hard to get her to start taking them. Once she figured out how to get from one 40 min sleep cycle to the next, we were golden! Google "nap extensions." Definitely takes time & dedication but if you are a SAHM to one & can manage to basically watch him like a hawk for the first sign of stirring (you need a video monitor) & then rock/pat him back to sleep before he fully awakens, it might be worth it!
