If our teacher asked, we'd probably would have said yes! But then immediately regreted it haha. It's a lot of work! Sometimes it seems like schools run on volunteer labor.
If your teacher asked, would you agree to be the class mom/dad?

We would probably decline because we wouldn't have the time to dedicate. But, we would volunteer our time when we could!

What are the responsibilities? I guess it would depend. If it sounds like too much work I'd probably decline. I do a lot of other volunteer stuff already elsewhere.

If I wasn't employed? Definitely. I'll be returning to elementary education, and love the buzz of the classroom.

Yes, I would do it. It's so important that I would give up other volunteer activities.

I am the "class mom" for our toddler room. The duties are pretty limited though; I welcome new parents/kids, send out emails, attend meetings 1-2 times a month, am the designated contact person for any concerns parents in our room have, etc.

It depends on what it entailed! But I work full time out of the home, so I kind of doubt I'd have time for it, depending on how much work it was!

I volunteered the first year Wagon Jr. was in daycare for the toddler room. It was so hard juggling everything that I did not volunteer again. However, this year they asked me to be the class parent for LMW's toddler room. I said no, but also said if they couldn't find anyone else I would consider splitting the duties.
Guess who is the sole class parent
But it's ok. The duties are really super limited. I used to do wish lists for the class (small items for parents to donate like a bag of flour, sheets of stickers, etc for special arts and crafts) but the teachers stopped giving them to me and they just post a sign up sheet on the door. So I really just have to email the parents every time the class parents get a communication.

I would probably do it, because I would have more influence over what kinds of foods would be served during class parties (a concern of many parents of kids with peanut and other allergies).

Maybe if I was a SAHM or if I worked part-time...but as a FT WOHM, I won't have time for it. I'd love to do it though.

@Mamaof2: I know! I feel bad that as a WOHM I don't know how to volunteer for these things.
I would volunteer though to help with communications though (like managing email messages to parents and gathering support, sign up sheets, etc). Maybe do it in partnership with another mom who had more time to run errands and be in the class.

If it didn't involve in-class participation, or duties during working hours, I would totally do it.

I would but I plan to sah so it would make it easier. It seems like here the bulk of the duties is attending a few meetings per year and coordinating class parties and the parent volunteers for various events through the year. Working full time would make it challenging and in that case I doubt I would consider it.

I would love to and I'm lucky to have a lot of flexibility with my employer. My only reason is that LO have a severe peanut allergy and I would like to be present when they have parties.

I would love to if I am SAH at the time... But there are probably other parents who are better suited. I am not very organized!

Yes! I'm looking forward to being involved in Sadie's education. I have a degree in education though.

I would! But I'm a teacher myself, so I'm not sure how that would work haha. If I was a teacher at my kids' school, I would def try to be as involved as I could.

It depends what I would have to do. I never had this growing up. Is this something they do in private schools, too?
nectarine / 2936 posts
I'm a teacher and the schools I've been at have never had class moms/dads. If someone volunteered to do it that would be fine, but I would feel bad asking someone to take on that responsibility!
