Have you seen this? So sad. I bolted the furniture in my child's room for this very reason. Its the only place they are alone for long periods of time unmonitored in my house. TV's are a big culprit as well as seen the video in this article. Make sure they are on a secure surface and pushed back as far as possible.

I know what you are talking about though... my mom was mentioning this to me last night. Luckily we only have a crib, a twin bed and a small bookshelf in LO's room. We do have a big ikea dresser in our master bed room but LO is never in there alone but he does play in our room when we are getting ready so I might get the set to bolt it down.
edit: I do feel super sad for the families that lost their child because of this. There are just so many things that you don't think of or prepare for till stuff like this happens.

I was able to access the original link-- thanks for posting. It is an incredbly sad article and a good reminder that child proofing isn't only necessary for crawling babies/early walkers. We have been a little lax on strapping furniture to the wall but I'm determined to fix that now!

This family is local to us, it is really a heartbreaking story that I always remember. Unfortunately we had good intentions to bolt everything but with our recent move we haven't made it a priority. We really need to do it, my son is at a very curious age but doesn't yet realize he can hurt himself.

That's so awful. People (mostly DH) look at me like I'm crazy when I say we have to bolt low furniture to the ground but things can happen that you would never expect! That's the first thing we need to do before C moves out of the crib. (Not an IKEA dresser but it's the same with any low dresser in sure).

@Foodnerd81: I got the same reaction from DH when I insisted we bolt our changing table to the wall which also has drawers. Sure enough though my 2.5 yo climbed on top of it one day and was standing on it one day when I walked in! I try not to let the "you're crazy" looks from DH bug me too much.

@Amelieisme: luckily ours in an older dresser with drawers that are pretty hard to pull out (it takes me two hands) so it would be a while before she could open the drawers, but it's just not worth the risk at all.

I heard about this earlier today and DH bolted DS's Malm dresser to the wall this evening.

We have a MALM dresser, it's in our closet for extra storage. We bought it about a year or two ago. What I'm confused about though, is that ours came with parts to secure it to the wall... were these not safe? Or were there products out there that did not have these included?

A very good reminder! I def have to talk to DH about trying to bolt down anything that might pose as a risk!

I'm also a little confused because in the article it says that IKEA didn't include warnings in the instructions, but I've always seen the warnings for the furniture we've bought there for at least the last few years.

@littlecasita1122: I just read the article again and it looks like IKEA responded saying there are warnings. I still have the instructions to the dresser so I could double check, but I do remember seeing the image of the warning that it could tip.
I think this was negligence on the parents and not IKEA. But it is a good reminder for people to anchor ANY furniture to the wall.

That was a gut wrenching read. Her son was the same age as mine is, and they look a little bit a like. I can't even imagine the hurt and guilt she will carry.
The article mentions that Ikea doesn't supply anchoring materials but when we did LOs big boy room, both dressers came with them? Maybe they do with some, or are starting to include them more often? My husband wasn't super convinced we needed to use them but I forced him to. I think he would feel differently if he read this article!

@Shizaz: Ok that makes sense, I definitely remember our last bookcase having the hardware included. My heart breaks for the parents but if their dresser had the hardware included, IKEA really can't be blamed for it.
This reminds me how we really need to secure a tall corner cabinet in our dining room ASAP. Luckily my preschooler isn't interested in it, but you never know.
