As concisely as possible..
LO is almost 5mo. Has generally been a good sleeper (particularly at night) although we have had some issues the last month or two. She's been swaddled for night since the hospital and I think that's a big part of the reason she's always been a great night sleeper. She's also swaddled for naps since about 6-8 weeks. I've tried weaning her off the swaddle a few times by doing the 1 arm out thing and that has always failed (she just would. not. go. to. sleep).
Since she's getting older we thought we could/should try to sleep train her (off of me rocking her to sleep every night using ferber) and swaddle wean at the same time.
night 1: put her in a zippadeezip and set her down drowsy but awake. blah blah blah she cried until she projectile vomited, I gave up and swaddled her and set her down and she was asleep in 3 min
Night 2: put her down in swaddle drowsy but awake, out in 20 min
Night 3: ditto night 2, out in 15 min
Night 4: ditto night 2, fell asleep in 10, then up and cried until I gave up and rocked her to sleep
Night 5 (last night): after 4 or 5 rounds of her falling asleep and waking up screaming I gave up and rocked her to sleep and she slept all night
Well this morning at 645 she woke up and I gave her her paci, as usual. but she started crying 1 minute later so my DH was like ok I'll just get up with her, and in that 1 minute she had figured out how to roll over and he found her face down in her bed, swaddled. GAH.
Note: LO still has not figured out how to roll unswaddled. Like, at all. Not belly to back or back to belly. She almost never even tries to roll belly to back-- I don't think she has any clue this is a goal. She does sometimes try to roll back to belly but not that often and her arms get in the way.
So, cue freakout. What the hell do we do tonight? We can't swaddle her obviously. But the last time we tried to put her down unswaddled she cried until she puked. And even when I've tried to rock her to sleep unswaddled when trying to wean in the past (and that was just 1 arm out weaning) she just refused to fall asleep.
I know people say that once a baby can roll unswaddling isn't that big of a deal because they will just roll onto their belly and go to sleep-- but that presumes a normal baby who first rolls belly to back, then back to belly BEFORE figuring out how to roll swaddled. My kid can't do either. And even if she figures out how to roll back to belly today (or tonight when we put her down)-- I think she'll just get super pissed she's on her stomach bc she doesn't particularly like tummy time and has no interest in learning how to roll belly to back.
So seriously. What do we do?? I have no idea if we should try to trudge on (somehow) with sleep training? Or if we give it up and try to rock her to sleep until she gets used to unswaddled-ness and then try sleep training again?
Oh also I have a bad cold and keep coughing and waking her up when I try to rock her to sleep for naps.
Sigh.
