We moved our second to her own room around 2 months. It is all personal preference comfort, I sleep better without all the sounds right next to me.

Knowing that, I also switched to a video and a separate sound monitor. I only use video to peek if needed. We use sound machines as well and I have not found a video monitor that blocks that. The sound monitor clicks on when the sound in the room hits the level we set, I love it. Otherwise the monitor is silent, we don’t have the white noise coming through like we did on the video with our first. Unfortunately I bought it on a whim as a close out/open box item on Amazon but I would look into this option if you are open to it.

We had a Motorola with our first that I dislike and we have the Infant Optics now but the sound monitor has been a game changer.

We switched our girls to their own rooms by 8 weeks. I am a super light sleeper and all the baby noises and scratching woke me up! No advice on a monitor because we used an old school one that was just sound, and we definitely didn’t use it at night. Our bedrooms are fairly close and I always woke up easily when they woke at night.

@cake2017 the video monitor is mounted on wall so we can see the whole crib and the sound monitor sits on a bedside table between the crib and glider. She can’t reach it if she wanted to but it is sensitive enough to pick up her cries.

We found we all slept better when she was in he space, every family and baby are different on timing.

@cake2017: initially we did nurse/bottle to sleep and swaddle so he would often be asleep and put down (and hopefully stay asleep!) When we sleep trained around 7mo he would fuss and cry and chatter and then put himself to sleep eventually which he still does now at nap and night at 13mo.

@cake2017: We try to put him down when he's drowsy but awake and CALM. Calm being key, because if we don't get him calm and he's fussy/cranky/fighting sleep too hard, he will just rile himself up and fight sleep badly. He's pretty good now with us putting him down drowsy but awake and he'll fall asleep fast. If he cries during the night, I definitely hear him immediately. In fact, I always hear him before he's started crying. The monitor has about a two-second delay, so by the time his fussing comes in over the monitor, I'm already awake and listening to him.

Just note my little mini review of it above in my first comment, for the downsides to it. The positives are that it's easy to have it linked with the Owlet sock and get all the info in one place on our phones. We can check in on him if one of us is out of town because it runs via the app. I know someone who used a Nest video monitor for this same reason while her husband was abroad.

@cake2017: No problem! DH actually mentioned today that it's been running better recently, so maybe they've worked out some kinks.
