I had an unplanned c-section with a spinal, no Pain meds before or after. My milk came in on day 5 so I consider that delayed but we never supplemented and we're still breastfeeding at 27 months.

I had a c-section with no labour with my first, and my milk came in before I left the hospital (36 hours), and she started nursing within 15 minutes of birth. My second was a long, complicated VBAC with induction, gas, epi, postpartum complications, antibiotics, painkillers etc. and she nursed within an hour of being born. I tandem nurse them now. I had no problems with breastfeeding or supply ever.

Late epidural on Friday morning, milk was in by Sunday, nursed until we weaned at 17 months.

It's also interesting that they consider you delayed if your milk comes in after day 2. I thought day 3 or 4 was more the norm, personally. I didn't even give it a thought when mine wasn't really in until day 4.

I had epidural, milk was late and didn't come in til day 5, but we nursed successfully w no issues til 13 months!

I had a c-section both times with spinals and had no issue with my milk coming in - both times day 3. With ds1 my supply dwindled around 6 months but I don't think it had anything to do with my delivery and much more related to work and genetics.

I had an epidural for the last maybe 8 hrs of my couple day labor. Milk came in on day four and lo ended up being formula fed. But I really don't think the epidural has anything to do with it. The looooong labor maybe.

I had a c-section with a spinal. My milk came in on day 3 and I nursed successfully for 13 months with no supply issues.

@sarac: my understanding was that anytime up till day 4-5 was still normal?

i had an epidural with olive and nursed until 26 months, and could have easily gone on longer. i weaned her by choice!

@sarac: @Kemma: every LC I saw said up to day 5 was normal! 2 days feels quick

I voted pain meds, no delay, and nursed as long as expected. But I had to stop at 9 months due to low supply but I feel like that was due to not nursing enough because I was working and nothing to do with my pain meds or c section. My milk came in on day 3 and I had a ton of milk at first.

I had a scheduled c-section - so a spinal block and pain meds. My milk came in by day 3 and I am still nursing at a few days shy of 1 year.

There wasn't really an option for me. I didn't have any meds and no delay with milk coming in, but my supply was crappy and I had to start supplementing with formula in a month. I'm not sure if it was my anatomy, all the bad advice I got about nursing on a schedule, or the fact that I couldn't eat enough thanks to a freak supplement reaction. Guess I'll find out when I try again!

I had an epidural and some pitocin because the epidural stalled labor, and no delay in nursing. We nursed for 14 months, as a primary source of nutrition for 12 months. DS did not nurse well until my milk came in, but he did not need to be supplemented.

I had an epidural and vaginal birth. I had no delay, we are still nursing now at 19 months, and I had a full supply (never had to supplement).

I had an epidural with both and my milk didn't come in until day 5 both times! I'd never heard this correlation before, and I guess the only way I'd know if it made a difference for me would be to go natural with #3, which is probably not happening It wasn't really a big deal, I just supplemented with formula until my milk came in and then we had no supply issues (well, sort of an oversupply actually). But if someone is very against supplementing with formula I think I would avoid an epidural. Obviously lots of people here had no issue with delayed milk coming in after pain meds, but I see a correlation at least.

I had an epidural both times. First time it took a while (day 5) but my son also wouldn't latch until then. Second time it was almost immediate but my younger son was an awesome nurser out of the womb.

@Kemma: good to know, last time I was kind of freaked out about waiting until day four. (Jaundice)

I really appreciated seeing everyone's responses--this really helped me make my decisions when in labor, having heard from all of your experiences. So, I wanted to come back & update with my own info (as I have so far, anyway). I did end up opting to try both an IV pain med & when that didn't touch the pain after 2 doses, I also got an AMAZING epidural. I could feel & move my legs & support my weight, but didn't feel any pain. She nursed right away & I also got my milk on day 2-3, so no delay. Hopefully my supply will stay good for as long as we want to nurse.

I can't vote, because I don't know yet how long we're going to nurse. I was med-free, she nursed in the first hour, and we're still going at 5.5 months and I WOH. Not sure we'll make it to a year without supplementing, but that's because of me being away from her for 50 hours a week!

DS1 : induced (pitocin), pain meds, poor latch and major pain. Tried nursing exclusively for 2 months, ended up pumping until 9 months along with supplementing formula until 1 year.
DS2: natural vaginal, NO pain meds. Latched right away. Nursed 19 months.

Pitocin and an epi, nursed twins without supplementing with formula for 13 months, and had 200 ounces to donate.

Congrats! Glad to here you guys are happy and healthy. I had an epidural with both my pregnancies and my milk came in fine. Best wishes for nursing. At this point probably just offering to nurse regularly the first couple weeks will hopefully help build a strong supply
