We are traveling away from the kids in November, and I'm wondering if we should add an international plan to at least one of our phones while we are away. It's $10 per day if it's used, and nothing if we don't use it at all on any given day. I'm thinking it's probably a necessity to keep in touch with my mom who will have the girls? But we have never traveled away from them that far before, so I'm not sure!

Do you/DH have an IPhone? When my parents travelled abroad we just used FaceTime. All that they needed was to be connected to Wifi. I have been told that skype works the same way.

We always have. If you have Verizon you can add the $10/day plan or $40 for an entire month (more economical if staying more than 4 days). If I was traveling without my kids, I would definitely do it. What if your kids just want to call you, or you them?
Be very careful with your data use too.
ETA: Actually now that I think about it, we didn't do an international plan last year when we were outside of the country in the carbiibean for only 3 days. We just used wifi to keep in connection with parents. Of course because I didn't text my mother for 3 days she was freaking out about that the whole time

@Bao: My parents were almost always available for me because of wifi access. They were traveling in Rome at the time. I would say just use wifi access for its offered at your resort. We were also able to iMessage because of wifi with no ill affect on their bill because they were nearly always connected to wifi.

No, and we travel internationally frequently. It's cheaper to do a one time use (for an emergency) than subscribe to a daily plan.
Eta: we just use wifi to call with FaceTime. If there were a real emergency, we wouldn't nitpick the cost of having to call.

This was important for DH and I when we traveled to Spain without DD last February. We did the $10/day Verizon add-on and it worked great. It was the ability for LO's caretaker to be able to contact *us* (which wasn't always an option with Skype or FaceTime) that was so important, thus the special plan.
We traveled to SE Asia and Turkey this summer (with LO) and temporarily used a T-Mobile plan just for the trip, though. It was actually much cheaper and the service was just as good - we only paid $25 through using Ebates to sign up. This might be another good option that you can continue to use for other trips. It was essentially unlimited data, talk, and text (they say it's a 2GB plan but they only throttle the data after 2GB - they don't charge extra).

We were in Europe this summer for 10 days while my sister stayed with DS. We just used whatsapp or FaceTime to call over wifi.

I also just use wifi to call over FaceTime or WhatsApp when traveling internationally.
