I think it depends on how much water got in the phone. I've wet my phone a little and did the rice thing for just a few hours and it was fine. But once it got pretty wet and it took about two days to get back to being functional again. The best way it dried out though was when I unintentionally left it in the car on a super hot day during the summer. Good luck!

I dropped my phone in a sink filled with water a few years ago. The phone was in the water for a few seconds but I had a phone cover on it. I left my phone in a rice bag for a good week. It worked perfectly fine. I hope the luck extends to your DH's phone, too!

A minimum of 48 hours.

At LEAST 24 hours, but wait as long as you can. If you turn it on before all the water inside has dried up, you risk frying it.

One time I spilled water on my laptop. I immediately unplugged it, removed the battery and put it in a Tupperware container with dry rice. I tried turning it on again 24 hours later and it would not. Another 24 hours later it turned on just fine!

@pui: yup I think it's really dependent on the kind of water damage...also, two stores that i spoke to said the rice trick is an urban legend (i.e. the rice does nothing, just leaving the phone off/alone is what allows it to dry up) but who knows! Definitely worth a shot (I tried it!).

Uh oh....

My phone dropped into the toilet before (it is a brand new clean toilet if you are wondering I was in a cloud after our bathroom remodeling and that's when it happened) but I did one huge thing wrong: I turned the phone on to check if it was OK. Huge mistake. But I did leave it in rice for almost a week. It never revived completely because it would be able to stay on for maybe 3 minutes, and then dies. It was good enough for me to retrieve all the data and backed it up before we had to take it back to the shop and let it RIP for good.

My electrical engineer husband told me afterwards that if such a thing happens, POWER OFF / SHUT DOWN the phone immediately. Remove the battery. Dry it as best as you can. Then leave it in a bag of rice. Not sure for how long... I would say at least 3 days to a week. Then it may have a chance of survival.

ETA: And remove the sim card too

I had the top left of the screen cracked, and I might have accidently peed in it; it was a multi tasking bathroom situation and I peed directly into the open space beside the frontal camera. TRYING THE RICE! but it might be a lost cause.

I own an iPhone5s and I, accidentally, dropped it in the toilet earlier... It has only been in the rice for about 2 minutes, right now I'm searching how long it'll take to dry out. I HAVE to use it. Like, it went INSIDE MY iPhone! Anytime I try to use it, like doing my passcode, a couple numbers won't work because it is so wet inside my phone. It wasn't in the water for that long!
How long do you think it should take? 24 hours? I'm really terrified, because I've never got my iPhone wet like this before.

Any other times it gets wet, nothing like this happens. And, right now (since it has been in a toilet), it's acting up. I'm just lucky I'm not the only one (OBVIOUSLY).

And, right after I told someone (I got the rice), they said that I shouldn't have turned on my phone after it got wet and she said that it might take a bit longer since I turned it off. Then she said, "You aren't supposed to turn anything electronic-like on after it gets wet. That could ruin the phone."

I'm really scared :0 (I know I am sending a reply, not a literal comment at the moment)

@LifeIsBoring2: You might be out of luck since you powered the phone back on after it got wet and tried to touch buttons. I'd leave it off and keep it in the rice for 48 hours. Good Luck!

My husband, for reasons known only to him, put his phone in the pocket of his swim trunks and then obviously forgot and went in the lake. He left his phone in water for days but it never worked again.

@LifeIsBoring2: My suspicion would be that since you tried to turn it on before it dried out, everything is fried. Good luck, I hope I’m wrong!
