I think it's ridiculous to imply that her giving 10% is less generous than a "regular" person's 10% because she has more money. Infact, we're talking percentages so it's probably the most fair you could do it. 10% is 10%. Not to mention that her 10% is worth more because she has more expensive stuff to sell than a "regular" person!

I think - just my personal opinion - that if people are sitting on extra money that they do not need (if they are secure in their life, children, retirement etc.) it would be kind to give to those who are not.

that said, 10% is more than I can donate to anything right now. so there's that. I think anything is better than nothing.

So she had a "charity" auction - made $$ off it and only donated 10% of the proceeds to charity? That's so slimy.

@yoursilverlining: Totally agree. I think it's great that she's giving money to charity but to host a charity auction then make a profit from it (especially given her net worth) is shitty.

It would be like me hosting a bake sale for charity then keeping some of the money.

Normally, 10% seems about right, but in this case, if it's a charity auction, it seems weird to only donate a small percentage of it to charity. Even if there are fees, she should donate all of what's left after the fees.

I think it sucks that she profited from it-- I feel like whatever the operating expenses are, you subtract that from what you made at the auction, and donate the rest to the charity.

If she were giving 10% of her yearly salary to charity like I (well, technically DH since I'm not bringing anything in right now) do, I'd say "Great! Good for her." No judgement at all.

However, giving only 10% of the proceeds when you are calling something a Charity Auction? Misleading and kind of low, honestly. All proceeds (meaning after fees and costs) should be going to charity if it is a "charity auction".

I've seen her eBay auctions and if I remember correctly I did think that the entire proceeds would be donated. I think it's all about expectations--in this case, I thought that since it was listed as a charity auction, 100% of net proceeds would be donated. If it stated clearly that only a portion of net would be donated I wouldn't have a problem with that either. This goes for Kim and any other person who is running a fundraising effort.

I'd be equally upset if I was solicited for a donation from a local charity for donations and only 10% of it went towards the thing they told me they needed donations for and 90% went into some other purpose.

Is she actually calling it a "charity auction", or is she saying she is auctioning off stuff and then giving 10% of her proceeds to charity? There is a big difference there.
