I bought a car seat travel bag today as it was on sale. I didn't do any research but have 2 weeks to return if I want.
Are these necessary? and if so, is there a recommended one?
I bought this one as it says it fits Safety 1st which is what i bought for our second car and for when we travel by plane (which is not very often at all).

I had never even heard of these until today. We just leave our seat in the car as a permanent fixture though.

I used one because I didn't want to risk damage to the seats. It was well worth it!

Yes. The bag is always filthy when we get it back from the baggage claim. I'm so glad the carseat itself is protected. As a bonus, we stow diapers in the bag along with the carseat. Free extra space

I just bought cheapie bags for the car seat and stroller. Lucky I suppose since our stroller bag was trashed, only minimal damage to the stroller.
But for a car seat if you're buying a seat on the plane for it, I wouldn't think it's a super necessity?

When I've gate checked a seat the bag always comes back disgusting. I can't imagine what a seat without a cover would turn up looking like. Definitely a keep for me. We just use the red one they sell at target. Flight check or something like that.

We bought one at a consignment sale - its the same brand as your's but the kind with backpack straps for DH to wear through security.

BUT we bought it because we don't have a separate travel car seat and did not want to risk damaging our UP Mesa seat. Totally worth it. Same for our stroller - we bought the stroller bag too.

@Sapphiresun: thank you for stating the obvious that my clueless mind could not come to on its own! Yes, I bought the car seat for our second car AND for LO to sit in ON the plane, so no risk of it getting damaged with all the cargo!
And it seems like there might be cheaper options if I ever need to check a seat for some reason, since @oliviaoblivia: mentioned they have them at target.

I've always used trash bags. The seat gets dirtier in everyday use than on a plane! So we wash it.
