I was planning on hosting a sip and see after LO #2 is born. I like the idea of planning a party where people can meet LO #2. But I don't want people to think it's an excuse for gifts. Thoughts? Do you think having a sip and see is gift grabby? I can put on invite, no gifts. I just like entertaining.

We didn't call it a sip and see. Instead I just evited friends and said "thank you for all your support...etc...please come over for a bbq!" Something along those lines. Some showed up with gifts but the tone was very casual and fun.

I like @Rubies: idea. Typically, I see Sip and Sees hosted by someone other than the mother.

@Weagle: @Rubies: yay, not so sure a BBQ in northern VA in January will be attended... No one really supported me , it's just a Chance to see the baby and drink mimosas

@Weagle: was it at someone else's house? I pretty much sip and sees hosted by the parents since it's at their house.

@littlek: Maybe just present it as a get-together. We host lots of dinners and potlucks and parties in the winter for no reason other than to see friends and get us all out of our houses! I've only been to them at other people's houses so the mom doesn't have to do any work.

@Weagle: I'll just clarify no gifts. It's really a chance to meet the baby for our close friends and neighbors. I don't want them thinking it's a party. Just stop by have a snack and see the baby. I don't want this to be a long event.

I thought sip & see's were hosted by the parents at their home aka baby's crib since the baby's are usually under no more than 2-3 months old. If I were hosting one for my babe I'd leave off any mention of gifts and make it a 3 or 4 hour open house.
In general, I don't think they are gift grabby. Sip & See is a really efficient way to introduce a baby to family and friends.

@littlek: interesting! I've never heard of a Sip and See. Will file this idea away for later. I think it would be fine for you to host it and don't even worry about putting anything about no gifts on the invite. Set it up as a causal open house with drop in hours. Some people will prob bring gifts, but thats just fine!

Sip and Sees are generally hosted by the parents and you can specify no gifts, as you mentioned. Otherwise yes people may see it as an excuse to get more gifts, but who doesn't like buying gifts for new babies??

@littlek: we just called it an open house. Then people get the impression that's it's more of just a stop by to meet baby, not a hang out and party type event.

If I was coming to meet see a new baby I would always bring a gift. I think if you really don't want to get too much I would write "no gifts" - but you know some people will bring some anyway! Also like the open house idea!

@littlek: we're planning on hosting one too but likely won't call it a sip n see. Just invite people for an open house between x time. We'll have snacks, apps and drinks.

I agree, calling it a sip and see doesn't seem correct if it's hosted by yourself. I love entertaining too and think people are generally around in January other than MLK weekend and love events to attend. I would probably would call it a New Year's Brunch and I'm sure most people would bring gifts anyway!

I always bring a gift to meet a new baby anyways. I don't think a sip and see or open house is gift grabby. Even if you specify no gifts I would probably bring one anyways

@Sparkler: I think I'll just call it an open house with intention of meeting the baby. I don't want to make it seem like a party, I just want it to be casual but with food.
