At my son's morning drop off, I saw a kid in his class (3 and 4 year olds) riding in the FRONT SEAT. Then a couple weeks back, I saw another kid (same age) getting out of the back of the car...no carseat, no seatbelt, just standing in the back. It seriously makes me rage-y. Have any of you seen this at your school? What would you do? Can anything be done??

I haven't seen this but we do let our lo get unbuckled without fully getting out (car stopped and parked) and she will climb all over the car while we are doing something else before getting out so hopefully that's what was happening!

Same as @2littlepumpkins: , we usually get to school early, park, and let LO get out of her seat and come up in the passenger seat or stand in the back.

I've seen some poor choices being made by parents at daycare. I just keep my mouth shut....

I've never seen anything like that here. Parents are sticklers for safety where I live. I don't think there much you can do except pray for the children's safety, if praying is something you do!

@2littlepumpkins: i wish. at our school, you need to park (in a parking spot) and take your child inside. i usually come early, take my oldest son in, then nurse my youngest in the back seat before we head home. in each case, i saw these cars pull up, park, and immediately saw each scenario.

@ustechie: could you talk to the director and suggest that they put up information about carseat safety? That would be the only thing I could come up with.

In our old neighborhood, there were a couple of families who let their toddlers ride in the front seat, no car seats, etc. Just a mess. It would make me so angry but I didn't think there was really anything I could do.

I wonder if the police would hang out nearby and start giving tickets for it?
A friend of mine put her 6 month old front-facing, and not even strapped in tight. I couldn't believe it! She claimed she didn't know it was illegal, but even after I told her, didn't switch her back. -
@ustechie: if you are 100% SURE the parents are driving the vehicle without children in proper restraints, you should call the police & report them. That's illegal. If it were me, I'd talk to the director first, describing exactly which families you've seen it from so the director can speak with them. I'd also offer to provide some basic car seat safety info to the preschool so they can hand it out/post it for all the families.

@Pumuckl: I agree with this approach maybe mentioning something general to the school about seeing some car seat safety issues happening and ask they post something educatuonal.

Our school mentions car seats in their handbook. Can you look at yours? You could mention it to the director, and ask that they send an email to remind parents that car seats are required when picking up/dropping off.
I don't know where you live, but you could double check the car seat laws in your state.
Everything you mentioned sounds illegal.

I would talk to the director and see if they can add a safety fact sheet to the newsletter or something. If it's really bad you could see if a cop could come wait in the parking lot.

@ustechie: I saw a dad put a kid my daughters age in the back seat, without a car seat. Then a older sibling in the trunk. There was plenty of room in the back seat so I don't get why.

Thanks for the suggestions ladies! I think I'm going to email the director and just ask her to send out a memo or something about car seat safety. Not sure there is much else I can do, unfortunately.

Hahahaha that's hilarious. I might've called the cops, too, if I saw some kid get put into a trunk! I had no idea they had built-in car seats.
