My mom and I have had no similarities. My mom also had really fast labors, and my first one was 8 hours, and the second 36 (but it had special circumstances, so I don't really count that one.)

I totally expected to be just like my mom with it. I'm more like my grandmother, I suppose, but I'm not really sure it's all that hereditary at this point.

@ElbieKay: my doctor told me no. I was worried because my mom went two weeks early with me and a month early with my sister. She also labored so fast she didn't have time to get an epidural, while I was in labor for thirteen hours (still didn't get an epidural though).

Ours were similar in that they were relatively quick and had few complications. But my sisters labor was slow, complicated, and ended in an emergency c section. I think there is some connection but not always.

We both had bigger babies- C was over 8 lbs, my moms kids, 4 out of five were upper 7- 9 lbs.

My mom had fast and easy pregnancies and labors with my sister and me. My sister did not get lucky. She had a rough pregnancy and a super rough labor.

So far my pregnancy is going very smoothly and easily. So I'm hoping maybe I got the gene! Lol

My experience was almost identical to my moms except I needed a c-section because DS was breech. We both had our water break naturally to start labor, both delivered early (she was 37 weeks and 36 1/2 weeks, I delivered at 36 weeks) and we both had fast labors. I was fully dialated in 4 hours and rushed for an emergency c- section, she labored for around 4 hours also.

I remember our midwife saying that she has seen similarities but I don't think she mentioned any research to prove or disprove that theory.

Of the women on my mom's side, even though we are all completely different body types, various ages when giving birth, and some went early while others late, we all had fast labors.

My mom and I had similar labor lengths. She was in labor with me for 15 hours, and I was in labor for about 13 hours. However, she was unable to push me out, so they had to do a c-section. I pushed LO out in 30 minutes.

My mom had very quick (less than 3 hour) births, and so did I.

My mom and I were night and day regarding delivery . . . mine was an (early) unplanned induction that almost failed (I had no progress for almost 24 hours) and multiple complications (I am still amazed the Doc didn't just cut LO out), and hers were both pretty much on time and less than 12 hours from start to finish.

Hard to say - my mom was in labor for about 12 hours before they did a C-section because she hadn't progressed past 2 or 3cm. But listening to all of the research I was doing and things I learned in my birthing classes, she says that she probably went to the hospital too soon, when she was in early labor still. Her pain was fairly manageable, but if they hadn't done the C-section around 12 hours I guess it's possible hers would have ended up like mine.

At the 12 hour point my pain was also manageable and I was only 2cm dilated, but I had just gotten to the hospital. Shortly after that my pain level skyrocketed but my progress was still basically nothing, my body was just fighting it despite all the visualizing, the tub, the exercise ball and massage/pressure points, etc. None of it helped with the mind blowing agony I was in, so around 20 hours I got an epidural. My body did start progressing then, but once I got close to transition my LO's heart rate started quickly dropping, and when position changes and getting more oxygen in me didn't help, they had to do an emergency C-section since if the heart rate drop had continued during pushing we may have lost him.
