I HATE this question!!! Every time my baby starts crying even just a little, someone immediately asks this. At first, this question gave me massive anxiety because we had such a hard time with breastfeeding (much better now!). But that question still drives me insane. Even if she isn't hungry, I don't mind if you hold her and attempt to stop her crying before tossing her back over to me 30 seconds later when I've barely had a moment to pee. Humpfh. Anyone else commiserate?

@highwire: I HATED that when LO was smaller. I absolutely hated it and a lot of times I saw it as a reason for the person to want to give her back to me while she was crying. I heard this question all the time though and it drove me insane. Sometimes, she just wanted to cry or maybe had gas or something. And I know she used to put her hands in her mouth when she was hungry, but some of the time, she actually was just chewing on her hands for no reason.

I get this ALLLL the time. Every time she cries, I get asked "Is she hungry?" and if I just fed her, then it's "She's tired then. Put her to sleep.". Like as if that didn't already cross my mind. And like it's that easy to just have her go to sleep. ugh.

sort of. I once read that something crazy like 80% of the time when a baby/infant cries it IS because they're hungry.
But, yes, sometimes he just wants to be held. And your arms work just as well as mine, thankyouverymuch.

Yes, my dad used to say, "feed that baby", every time he cried. Or if I was finally eating, they would say stop eating and feed him. There were times where I felt like they wanted me to starve or pee on myself. My husband was understanding.

@highwire: ugh, HATED this!! even more when they'd start brushing his cheeks/face/lips and ask if he was hungry. I wanted to punch them in the face.

I hate it to, infact I dont even get it as a question i get "she is hungry" "Feed her and stop starving her" or best of all " why dont you want to feed your baby?" It really really really aggravates me. I dont know why people are obessed with me feeding my child or why they think they know better than me. Once I snapped at my mom and said "I live with this baby so I know what she wants" and she just laughed it off and said "trust me she is hungry"

My husband asks me this and it makes CRAZY! Don't you think if she was hungry I would be feeding her??

Yep. All the damn time! LO is breastfed and whenever she cries it's like "Is she hungry?" "Do you think she had enough to drink?" At first it made me want to scream, but now I just ignore it.

Ugh!!!!! I hated this too! Even DH would pull that one out. I had fed her 30 minutes prior and she would cry and he would say she must be hungry! SHE'S NOT HUNGRY!!!!!!!! Lol!

I turn into Ms.Bi*** when I have to answer this 5x a day. So annoying!
And so finally at least my mom stopped this exact question, but every time LO fusses even a tiny bit, my mom is like "What's wrong with him?!" (with a look of very deep worry). I'm like, "he's a 3month old...they fuss. Sometimes for no reason whatsoever.." -
Haha, I think people do this because they want an excuse to not try to calm the crying baby. My cousins 4 mo old was at Christmas this year and it was amazing how he became a "hot potato" whenever he whimpered. And these were women who raised several babies!

I hate all questions when I'm supposed to know how my lo feels. Is she hungry? Does she want some cheese? Is she cold? Do you think she wants some milk?
I dont know. I'm not her. Your guess is as good as mine.

Yes! Hated it. My husbands aunts used to say 'he's hungry! Give that kid a bottle' every time he cried. I would eventually give in just to shut them up. He ended up having reflux so that's why he always seemed hungry

Yikes. Feel like I'm guilty of this one! I've asked a mom that when I was holding their 3 months old for about 20 minutes, and then he started to cry. I asked purely out of a curious state. Like "is he hungry, or do I suck at holding him!?"
I will know not to ask this again!

I have the opposite problem! When she IS hungry whoever has her usually won't give her up! "oh she wants to walk around/is bored/your mom is too nervous!"...ugh!! I know what my baby needs, tyvm!

Yes I hate this, and we've had a family member recently basically accuse us of starving LO because he went down two percentile points at his last checkup. If the doctor's not concerned, you shouldn't be either!!

YES!! DH did this a lot when LO was really young. Yes, putting my boob in his mouth will likely stop the crying. No, that doesn't necessarily mean he was hungry or he couldn't have been soothed some other way!

My mothers solution to every noise was tha she was hungry for the longest time..... it will get easier but that doesn't make it ajy less annoying

Ugh yes! My dh tries to hand her off the second she starts crying bc of course that's the only reason she would cry!

I hate that too. I try explaining to people that usually if she's screaming it's because she's tired, not because she's hungry.
