I just came across this news story about a school where the male vice principal spanks the female students. They chose to get spanked instead of getting suspended but thought it would be done by a female.
I kinda think the whole spanking in schools is a little out of place in this modern era that we live in.

Yep, in fact, I was paddled quite regularly in elementary school (I liked to talk while the teacher was talking-big no no!). The vice principal would say, "Oh you again. Assume the position" and i would put my hands on the wall, spread my legs and stick my bottom out.
Its not done in every school district, but in some of the more rural areas its quite common.

I don't know if it still is, but I def. got spanked in elementary school by the teacher. I very much agree with it, (only in elementary school, MAYBE middle) once you hit highschool I think it's strange. I would allow my childrens teachers to spank them depending on the situation.

It is not allowed in Nebraska anymore, I was surprised to see how many states still allowed it. It seems very outdated, and I do find it completely 100% inappropriate that a male was spanking a female student, they should have followed the rules set in place (male spank male, female spank female.)
And I do not think anyone should be allowed to paddle hard enough to leave a bruise or welts, that would be considered child abuse in any other circumstance, it should not be allowed to be okay in a school system.

Yikes I guess I better investigate this. That certainly never happened when I was growing up. It wouldn't even occur to me that this would be legal anywhere in this day and age. That alone would be enough for me to move to another school district or go to a private school. NO ONE but me or my husband has the right to lay a hand on my child.

It's still legal in Texas. I don't know if they use it in our school district. My elementary school gave my parents the chance to opt out of paddling as a punishment. My dad never signed that form though. I never did anything had enough to be paddled for.

It's legal in Fl, though it depends on each district. Our schools use it, but never without parental permission.

I never knew schools actually did this?! I was never spanked or hit in school growing up. That is unheard of here. Appalling actually....

Not legal as far as I know, but...many of my former co-workers were doing it. And the principals knew. The teachers openly bragged about how they were taking the kids in closets and hitting them, and pinning them down on the floor and twisting their limbs until they screamed, and the rest of us couldn't do anything because the principal considered them better able to control the kids. It was part of why I left.

That seems crazy! I have no idea if it's legal in NY, but I'm guessing no? I would not be okay with a teacher physically punishing my child, especially since I don't plan on using spanking.

I'm not sure if it's legal in IL but I know our school district does not use spanking. I would NOT be ok with that at all! We don't use spanking in our home as punishment and I do not think anyone should ever be allowed to spank MY child.

oh my gosh! I had no idea they did this!!!
I would NEVER EVER allow ANYONE else to spank my child other than DH and me. Not my mom, sister or IL's. Nooo freakin way. Not ok. I am not against spanking as a parent, but I would never allow another person to lay their hands on my child.

It's not legal in my state, and I'm glad. I'm not for corporal punishment, from teachers or even myself.
For schools where it is legal, I think they should stick to the males for males and females to females idea. I don't like the idea of a male teacher hitting a female student, or a female teacher hitting a male student. I do think it's good that both parents and students had a choice in the matter of whether to be paddled or not though.

Where I grew up in Texas, (Dallas) area, I had no idea paddling was even legal nor did I know anyone who got paddled at school growing up. It wasn't until I graduated from college and got my first job in west Texas (hugely conservative) did I find out about paddling in schools. Where I work, kids can get swats as an option out of in school suspension, but the parents must come up and swat. Administrators paddling leaves you open to an obvious lawsuit!!

wow. i'm in shock that people see this as acceptable. i know some people use spanking as a form of punishment for their own children, but if your boss would be arrested for doing it to you, why would it be okay for your child's 'boss' to do it to them?? as an adult you would have the option to leave, or at least be more likely to be able to defend yourself, a child doesn't have those options.
according to @Adira: 's link, it was outlawed in my state in 1971. i'm very pleased to be that it's a practice that's been out of use for a VERY long time around here, because i would NEVER be ok with someone inflicting pain as a form of punishment on my child.

Apparently it is. Although, I don't know anyone in my generation that actually got spanked/paddled at school. So, I think its a bit odd that its still allowed.
....except now that I think about it, my fiance was almost paddled at school when he was young. He knew his Grandfather would be upset if he was hit at school, so he made the teacher/principal/whoever call his Grandpa and he was right. Grandpa did not give permission. He also grew up in a tiny town here, so maybe its just not done here in the city....

that is so messed up. i used to watch wayyyy too many episodes of law and order: svu to ever be okay with some man spanking my daughter or anyone for that matter. i was spanked as a child and believe its a completely ineffective means of discipline.

Apparently it is still legal here in TN. Good thing we plan to move back to Mass before our kids are school age!

It is not legal anywhere I have ever lived or will ever live. I'm not ok with corporal punishment anywhere, especially in public institutions like schools.

@spaniellove: How horrible for the kids! You couldn't report it to the authorities?! Did parents know this was happening?
As far as I know it is not legal where I live and when I was school it wasn't. I really don't think it belongs in schools.

@Boogs: I wanted to report it, but would have lost my job for sure. It wasn't clear to me how much the parents knew. The school culture was so messed up; I tried to report that one of my students expressed suicidal tendencies in her journal and was cutting herself and the district psychologist came and called me a stupid young teacher for caring!

@spaniellove: Wow! Glad to hear you were able to escape that toxic environment. Now that you aren't at risk for losing your job you can still report those types of things.

It's illegal in Oregon. I grew up in AZ and it's apparently legal there, but I never encountered it or heard of anyone who did.
I am really disturbed at the image of a little girl leaning against a wall and sticking her rear end out for a male vice principal to swat, as a PP described. Ick.
