I've heard that it just isn't as comfortable for the mama using it...and that wearing the baby facing out is not good for their hips. But I think wearing baby facing in is fine when they're small, before they get too heavy. In terms of other soft structured carriers, I've heard raves about the Ergo. We got one and I am excited to use it! Also heard good things about the Beco.

The one good thing I have heard about them is that the baby can face in or out. I know facing out isn't as good for their hips, but I've heard from people whose babies were only happy if they could face out and see the world. But, if you have back problems (I do too) I seriously wouldn't risk it. It sucks to waste money, but how much worse would it be to have horrible back pain and have to take care of your baby?
That said-- I've never used a baby carrier! But I think I will get a Beco, Gemini I think-- the one that you can use face in or out and it gets good reviews for being easy on your back.

We got a baby bjorn as a hand-me-down and we also have a pognae (similar to the ergo). He can't face out in the pognae but he is in absolute heaven when facing out in the baby bjorn so ill use it for short walks. He is almost 19 lbs and I weigh 110. It's tolerable but not comfortable and I do feel bad about the crotch dangling thing...but he loves it. It's also super easy to take on and off.

If I could do it all over I would get the Beco as our one and only carrier since you can do forward facing with it.

I have been using the Ergo since LO was born (with the newborn insert and then without) and I love it. She feels really secure in there and the straps and waist belt seem to distribute the weight evenly so my back and shoulders don't suffer too much.

I used a friend's BBjorn a couple weeks ago and I found that my back and shoulders started to hurt almost right away. But my LO is around 16lbs, so I'm sure it's much more comfortable with a smaller baby.

Never had good experiences with the Bjorn (used it as a nanny). I have the Beco and unlike the Ergo, you can use it starting at 7 lbs! He did't care for it early on though, he liked the sling or wrap as a nb until 4 months. Then he liked the SSC's.

@TurtleDoves: my LO was born at 6lbs 9oz but he quickly packed on the pounds and he has consistently been in the 75th percentile since. At 10-12 weeks I still used my moby and he weighed 14-15lbs? I am generally more tolerant than most when it comes to pain/discomfort and I've never had back issues either. Some people love their baby bjorn and there's a reason why it's been around for so long and is still so popular!

We have a Beco Gemini which is super comfy, and I got it because the baby can face forward. Granted, she's only 11 weeks so we haven't had tons of use yet, but she seems to like it so far.

DS loved the Baby Bjorn and hated the Ergo. Loved facing out, hated being swaddled in any way. He's 10 months old and I still use the Bjorn. I've always used the Bjorn for short trips (like going to a store) and the Ergo for day trips (like going to a baseball game.. he still hates it but now that he's bigger he can move his head around so he's not right in my chest).

I actually LOVED my bjorn carrier when LO was a newborn--too small for the other carriers but *great* in the bjorn! He could face out or in--there are little leg loops for newborns (but my LO was so big he didn't need them.

Then around 15lbs he was just too heavy for it--my poor shoulders and back! And now I have a soft structured carrier with hip support. I think that bjorn makes an ergonomic carrier with a hip support belt now (yay!).

As a newborn his legs naturally were held up. PLUS they check hips at every well baby visit.
