I've been breastfeeding for 4 months now, and I'm on my 3rd clogged duct! I BF LO when I'm not at work, and I pump every 2 1/2 hours when I do work. I don't get it. Is there a reason that I don't know of that I keep getting them?

I have heard that side or stomach sleeping are risk factors, as well as improperly fitting bras (have you had a professional fitting recently?).

Have you tried taking lethicin? I heard it really helps prevent clogged ducts.

@leelee: my lactation consultant suggested that, but it says not to take it if you have a history of depression, which I do.

I had a few as well. The two things that helped me the most were a loose bra and drinking lots of water.

A few things to look into:
Bra that fits well, no underwires (Nordstrom will fit you and does a great job)
Don't hold your breast too tightly when nursing
Massage your breasts when you pump to "get it all out"
Make sure LO empties you totally at the last nursing before bed
Pump immediately after nursing in the AM if LO is sleeping through the night
Don't sleep on your side/stomach
Evening Primrose Oil daily may help
Drink a lot of water
I had them during the first few months too, but don't really get them much anymore, knock on wood. Good luck!

I agree with all of Mrs. Stroller's tips, especially the fitted bra. I got two plugged ducts due to ill-fitting bras that put pressure on my ducts.
