My happiest childhood memories are at summer camp... away from my family lol

Yes I miss family vacations. I have 3 older siblings and holidays and our summer beach trip were the only times we'd be together. Extended family joined us at the beach - it's a wonderful memory.

Nope not at all. My happiest memories are just the normal running around at home stuff.

I'm not sure they were the happiest, but they were some of the most interesting/memorable times. Even when vacations were a quasi-disaster, it made for a good story and forms part of the family lore more so than everyday life. I wonder if that skews the survey responses.

Not of "real" vacations to someplace totally different. But the visits to my moms parents are on the list with Christmases. We would drive 14 hours to see them in a station wagon and I thought their rural home was just magical. Even the drive I have fond memories of now although I'm not sure my mom would! (My dad usually stayed behind to work.) so even though I sometimes get annoyed at the pressure to visit family during all our vacations I know it will mean a lot to our kids.

We always had a summer holiday at Lake Taupo in NZ and I have such amazing memories of those trips away! We would pack up all our camping stuff into the boat and make the 2.5 hour drive north on a stinking hot summer day, some of the time we would break down, other times we would get stuck in the holiday traffic!

I remember fishing in the morning then swimming or waterskiing in the afternoons, going to bed when it got too dark to see and getting up when it got too hot to stay in the tent.

In the early spring we would have a week's holiday at our beach house, the weather wasn't always great but we played scrabble if it rained and walked on the beach if the weather was dry.

Our beach house was a tiny asbestos box and we never had expensive or overseas holidays but they were always fun and I loved them

Some of mine are. My grandparents had some friends who owned a beach house, so we'd always spend a week or 2 there in the summer. It was a lot of fun. And since we went with my grandparents, my brother and I rarely had to ride in the same car!

I've never really thought about this before, but yes! Most of my happiest memories were either vacations or family holidays.

One of the main reasons I decided to work and not SAH was so we would have the ability travel with our DD and any future children.

No, our vacations were fine and often quite happy memories (and the least expensive ones are the happiest of those), but not my happiest memories.

I don't think that the quotes/points made in that article add up to "everyone should go on more vacations," but rather, "families should spend more time together." Which makes sense to me, as the happiest families I know all spend a lot of time together. The converse seems to be true, too.

We didn't really do big family trips, except to go visit other family on the other side of the country. I think some of my happiest childhood memories are of Christmas morning. That said, some of my happiest memories with DH are from our pre-kid roadtrips.
