I did clomid for three months and wasn't monitored. So I can imagine that just tacking an IUI on at the end wouldn't be much different than what I did. But when I did finally move on to IUIs, I did only injectible meds for those. Best of luck as you move forward with this!

@doxielove: That is very interesting. I want to know why too! I've seen three different RE's and they have all done/will do monitoring, though my first one didn't do enough. I haven't had a cycle yet with my third one but as this isn't my first time I know what I should expect.

I did couple rounds of clomid and femara and was not monitored. The possibility of IUI was available depending on how I responded to medication. I did get one ultrasound for one of them to confirm ovulation but nothing as intense as I did when I finally switched to a RE clinic. I did injectibles and was heavily monitored (every other day, and then daily towards the end) before getting the IUI. I'm now 31 weeks

I've had two successful pregnancies with IUI + femara. It was through Kaiser and I was not monitored. The RE provided the option to monitor, but suggested no monitoring for the first couple of cycles. Yes, you have more information, but it doesn't really mean that anything changes with the IUI/medication process, so why the extra cost and hassle? After two or three unsuccessful cycles, then yes, monitoring would be useful and could help address whether there's a need to change to a different fertility drug.

@doxielove: I would definitely want to be monitored there are other factors not just ovulation they an check for like uterine lining and number of follicles size etc

My RE practice does unmonitored IUIs when they are unmedicated. I think they start monitoring as soon as drugs are added, though. ETA: The practice is the best in my city with a great reputation - I had LH testing on CD3, then the day after my + OPK, and then 7 days later along with with progesterone. Since all my tests and scans came back clear and I had "proven ovulation," they recommended starting with an unmonitored IUI.
