for some reason, i never thought i would have to deal with this, to this extent anyway. L has bitten me before, but he has done it more than ever this week and it makes nursing a little stressful!! And i wasn't planning to wean him anytime soon.
When he has done it in the past, i followed the advice of firmly saying "no" and not letting him nurse immediately. Well, now he seems to do it more when i say that. In fact, he sometimes laughs and gets a devilish look in his eye, I kid you not! So i googled for more advice. On the kellymom site, it says not to be firm, because that reaction could be reinforcing - which seems to be the case with L. And after closely examining when he bites the most, I have found that he seems to do it more frequently and forcefully when i am react loudly. Loudly meaning me yelling in pain (which i am working on controlling) or by saying "no" in a firm voice. So now I gently say "oh are you done nursing? because if you bite, it means you don't want to nurse to anymore" and i i give him his paci for something else to suck/chew on for a minute or so. If i feel he has drank an adequate amount, we may stop nursing altogether. However, more it often it seems to mean he needs a short break or to switch sides.
My gentler approach seems to be working as he is not biting as forcefully or as frequently (today at least). But it's still been happening daily.
I am just wondering who else has dealt with this and if it stops completely after a while? *I hope*
