@travellingbee: she was about 15 months when she was biting (after getting bit first).

@FaithFertility: Hey, mostly commiseration here! Daycare assured me it’s the age and they all grow out of it and it doesn’t mean we’re bad parents! DS has been on/off the biter and the victim in his daycare class. He mouths our shoulders when he’s excited and overstimulated, too. At home and school, we are reinforcing the same “we don’t bite our friends” and “we don’t bite mom and dad.” (And we put him down if we’re holding him.) Since he seems to be understanding more and more lately, I have started little “talks” about things that happened earlier in the day (“when you bit your friend at school...”).

I did buy “Teeth are not for biting,” recommended by the PP. He probably been bit 5 times and done the biting 5 times! It usually seems like it’s over a toy or a spot that the one kid thinks is his/hers. The kid who rightfully has the toy needs to “defend” themselves and use their teeth instead of words. At daycare he hears “use your words.” Lately I hear him saying “mine.” I guess it’s better than biting!

It’s been a few weeks since our last daycare incident. I don’t think we’re quite in the clear yet but fingers crossed.

Solidarity. My son was a biter for a while around that age. He was really too young to understand to not do it. He just grew out of it. And now he's a hitter lol! Not at daycare his sitters tell me but embarrassing sometimes.
