Yikes. I guess my first question is at what point does this problem child get removed from the day care. Why should you feel like you have to leave when your child isn't the problem. I would also want more information on how this issue is beig addressed with the problem child's parents and what they are doing to change things. Your day care has a responsibility to keep your daughter safe and a liability if she is hurt under their care so they should be taking this more seriously in my opinion.

When my sister was little, she was a biter, so my mom went with her to daycare for the day and when she bit another little girl my mom went over and bit my sister right where she had bit the girl. She stopped doing it haha.
If you know the child that is doing it, maybe you can talk to his mother? In a nice/joking way, like "Boy, Joseph sure has some teeth on him! Either that or DD must be so sweet he can't keep away from her!" So she knows that it is a problem for you, and can teach him to not bite?

I have a friend who works in a daycare and she said a lot of kids go through a biting phase (and my friend is often the victim). She said that it generally lasts a week. I would find out what kind of plans they have to stop the biting child (timeouts etc). Put the onus on them because shadowing is obviously not enough.

If I were you I would go into the center and have a face to face meeting with the owner and head teacher. Biting is unacceptable, especially seven. I don't care if it's a developmental thing!

Wow, I would defeintely sit down with the director of the daycare and see what else can be done to protect your child. The other child needs to be punished/removed/ect. in order to stop this behavior, as well as the parents of the other child involved. 7 times is WAY too many in my book, 1-2 understandable, but how is a kid that is being shadowed being able to get close to your LO that many times?? Not OK in my book!

@Thehistoryofus: This was my personal fear with daycare centers. I'm sorry but that is just too many bites. They may be within arms reach, but they aren't paying attention to the situation. And yes, it is a developmental stage, but your rights end when your fist hits my nose.

I know they can't give you the kids name (security, privacy or whatever). But they should give you a plan of attack for preventing this.

@Thehistoryofus: I am dealing with a biter in my LO's class at daycare right now and I was wondering how this situation turned out! My LO was bitten by the same child twice in a month (the second time was today) and I don't know what to do.

I really liked the center, but I just don't feel like she's safe. Did the biter just eventually grow out of it and stop biting your LO? Did you end up taking her out of the program?

I would drop in randomly drop in. I would also ask if maybe your LO could be put in a different class for awhile until this other child stops biting!

When I worked at a daycare, we had one boy who ALWAYS bit! It was so horrible and would happen so fast. You can always be watching him with other kids around, so try to understand that. We tried different techniques to keep him from biting kids, like giving him objects to bite, or talking him through events that triggered biting (anger, frustration, etc). maybe ask the teachers if they could or are doing those things.

My daughter started daycare last week in the toddler 1 room- all kids are 12+ months, DD is 11 months.
She got bit yesterday on the arm and it left a mark. I was upset, but have heard that it's "normal" at that age. Well her teacher texted me this morning and said she has been bitten again. I'm just so upset about it! I plan on talking with them when I pick her up today, and asking what they are doing to correct it (the teacher has assured me they are handling it, but how?). It's only her 5th day today and I just feel so bad for her because going to daycare has been such a hard transition already. Changing rooms/daycare isn't an option at all, nor is changing her hours. I'm not really sure what to do, I'm just feeling.... frustrated, angry, and sad for my baby.

She got one bite on Monday, one on Tuesday, and 4 yesterday! The teachers are now taking drastic actions and have met with the offending kid's family. My daughter doesn't seem too bothered by the actual bites, but I know that she cries when they happen. I'm just sick over it all, and my heart is broken. I'm hoping things get better, and I'm going there at lunch today to nurse her and assess the situation.

I did print out those questions to use when talking to the teacher, however she answered most of them on her own. She seems to think it's because DD is new in class, and the other kids are jealous that she is getting attention from the teachers (she cries a lot because she's overwhelmed and not used to daycare yet). They are bringing additional staff in to do diaper changes, etc. so that the main teachers can watch children more closely, and assigning one teacher to my daughter all day to watch her.

We shall see what happens....

@T.H.O.U.: Thanks for the advice, and for the hope! I know it will pass, I'm just ready for that to be now! And I also hope it doesn't turn her into a biter...

@LuLu Mom: you can not punish of expel a child at this age. They do not know what they are doing. They are not biting to be mean, it's developmental.
