Is there any reason you wouldn't try another IUI again? It's much cheaper and they say it usually can take up to a few tries to work. Our RE is having us do 5 before IVF. If we get to that point, we will also have to pay out of pocket and would likely have to ask my parents for money in order to do it.

We did IVF with ICSI and nothing was covered by insurance. It cost us about $20,000. We implanted 2 and got pregnant with one and he is now 20 months old. We also have 5 frozens to try. So it may be very successful.

I would recommend getting as much testing as you can done before. That is covered by insurance typically.

I think one of the things that helped us was our clinic. They have you come in every day for 2 weeks when you are actually cycling (taking all the injectibles) and blood tested me every morning. Every afternoon they changed the dosing for that evening and the next morning. One reason this was good for us is that I was going into hyperstim but they were able to call us in last minute and prep us for the trigger. If we weren't there, we would have had to cancel and start over.

@AbbyCadabby: I'm sorry you are going through this! I also live in a state where fertility coverage is not mandated and so we paid for IVF out-of-pocket. When you find a clinic to work with make sure you understand all your options in terms of payment and # of cycles included. We could have gotten a package (1 fresh IVF and 1 frozen) for a discount, but I was convinced I would get pregnant the first time around and didn't want to pay the extra up front. Unfortunately, my fresh cycle was not successful and we had to pay full-price for a frozen cycle (which luckily we were successful with) with $$ gifted from my parents. Before starting IVF, I thought that it was a sure thing first time around, but the honest truth is that docs don't know how you will respond to IVF meds (especially if you haven't done IUI with meds previously - which I had not). Even one IUI round night give the docs more info even if you do need to move onto IVF. I'd be happy to chat with you more about all of this. Feel free to let me know if you have questions. I live in NY state and my insurance covers 6 IUI's but no IVF stuff. We paid over $10 grand out of pocket for 2 cycles and meds.
