We had Jack Dawson, who destroyed us and now we have Jack Pearson, who is tearing us apart limb from limb. As I watch this this epsiode tonight I can’t remember the last time I cried this hard.
Who is feeling my pain?

I’ve been processing with Twitter since last night. . #thisisus It is pretty cool that we can watch along with live nationwide audience or at least on commercials. I didn’t like they flashed the hashtag right when he was dying though. But yah, hands down, phenomenal acting. I don’t cry much but I cried the most in the seconds when the mom had to go tell the kids.

Don't forget about Jack Shepard in Lost!!
But about last night... I feel like Jack was smarter than that, I mean really, who runs into a burning house?! I get that the arc of the story is how much Jack loved his daughter and how he'd do anything for her - but that was already crystal clear! Sad he's gone but luckily the show is all about flashbacks and we still get to see him.

Spoiler alert!!
@Autumnmama79: I’m SO MAD that he spent time getting all that memory stuff! Oh my god! Going in for the dog was pretty dumb- and I love dogs- but I get it. But spending time getting the stuff makes me so mad.
But yeah. Good episode. I just finished it.

@Autumnmama79: Oh yah!! Another Jack!!
I feel like he went back in because of his military experience and things that happened with his brother. I'm pretty sure his past intertwined with that and whether heroic or a tragic, he was compelled to go back in. As far as that memory stuff....pretty unbelievable....or miraculous....depending on how you swing.
Ok so how did you feel about that vending machine scene? Aaaaaaaaaaagh!!!!
I literally threw the pillow at the tv at the dog scene.
Nooooooooooooooo.
Also it is all the kids' fault that Jack died, not the Crockpot, because they didn't stick around and eat the chili so that's why there were leftovers. If they would have just stayed home, then the Crockpot wouldn't have been home. I want to blame everyone except Jack!!!!!

Mandy Moore did a great job during that nearly silent scene in the hospital room!
That said, this plot felt anticlimactic since it's been telegraphed for so long. I enjoyed the fake-out with Randall's family, though. I like it when this show really plays with the timeline to subvert our expectations (like with the crock pot last week).

@Autumnmama79: Totally agree! I was so mad that he went back in. I have so many problems with this scene. Why didn’t he climb out and go in the front door for the dog?? And how did he possibly get downstairs when they couldn’t even walk through the hall with out a mattress shield? I understand why he wanted to get the dog, but the whole thing just didn’t make sense.

@turquoisemama: this! It didn’t make sense. For a show that has so much going for it, and what was purported to be the most anticipated scene, it was just meh. It also seemed like they spent so much time in the house while the inferno was raging! Why didn’t Rebecca and Randall get out the parents window ASAP and why couldn’t jack and Kate go out her window?!?! Wouldn’t you just want to get the heck out any way you could as fast as you could? Those windows were right there and kept being shown on camera.
Curious to see if tomorrow’s episode redeems at all from last night anticlimactic letdown...

@turquoisemama: @Autumnmama79: @lady baltimore: agree with all of you! 1) dumb that he went back in for a dog 2) I was SO MAD at Kate last night when I saw her yelling about the stupid dog. Sorry, dog life does not equal human life.
3) I also think it was a little anticlimactic. I don’t know why, but for some reason I didn’t cry much. Maybe because it was amped up so much. I’ve sobbed many episodes (Williams death being the most) but this one I only got misty eyed when she walked into his room and saw that he really was gone.
Meh.

I agree with all those who said it was anticlimactic. I’ve shed quite a few tears over this show and totally expected to cry upon jacks death but nothin!
And I totally agree with @turquoisemama: it really did not make sense AT ALL. there’s no way he would have been able to make it downstairs if they barely made it across the hall 5 minutes before that.

@Autumnmama79: Totally, I was thinking that too about them getting out any window. My parents always told me to just jump if there was a fire. Better a broken leg than be burned up!
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@SweetiePie: I think it’s reasonable that a teenager would be that upset about the dog- teenagers aren’t as mature as grown adults. But jack should have been thinking about his kids needing their father, not the dog.
@Autumnmama79: he said it was too high to jump from Kate’s window/ side of the house. So presumably it was in a hill or something. I believe that part, I know in my house a jump from one of the bedrooms would be 3 stories to an asphalt driveway vs 2 two stories where you could climb off the porch roof to a grassy landing.

I read a theory on Twitter that Jack was having a heart attack when he woke up- that’s what woke him- so he somehow knew he wasn’t going to make it and wanted to do everything he could for his family. And that’s why he left Rebecca leave. But it doesn’t sound like it from interviews with the cast.

Our stupid DVR cut off the last five min so I saw everything but the scene with older Randall and I’m so upset!!!!! Haha.

@wrkbrk: can you watch it on demand? I’m sure that happened to a ton of people since the game and after game stuff must have run over. I just watched on demand last night.

Maybe it’s wishful thinking but I feel like they wouldn’t have randomly said “he called it a widow maker heart attack” without a sneaky reason...

@Foodnerd81: interesting article.
I too was underwhelmed by the episode. I was also furious he went back for the dog. I love my dog dearly - but I'd be livid with my husband over that. During the commerical break that follow I made sure to let DH know that while I love our dog our children and him come first. Not to mention, being in the house that long the dog probably wouldnt have survived anyways...given how small it was and how much smoke he had inhaled.
Anyways, I though MM did a GREAT job in the episode. I was devastated to see such a reckless decision bring Jack down.
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@Mrs D: I told DH the same thing! Go back in for the kids, maybe me, and that is it. Period.

@Autumnmama79: Yes for Jack Shepherd!!!!
I also thought it was dumb to go back and get the dog. They almost couldn't get out! Not to mention he also grab the tape and other shit. I am sorry, if you love your daughter so much, take care of yourself and don't get killed. Getting killed in an accident is one thing, getting killed because of your own (dumb) choice is another. Sigh.
I am also with those of you who didn't cry as much. Yes I cried but at the same time, I was annoyed. I loved the show in the very beginning (at S1 E1). I still love it, but I get turn off by intentional tear jerkers, and this show is one of them. The plots, the lines and everything about it is written to make us cry. Don't get me wrong, I still watch it and I still love the show and I think everything is beautifully presented, the character development is amazing...etc, it is just not the kind that I love intensely / that would make me want to watch it live / rewatch 20 times.
The only two shows that I ever make a point to watch it live: Lost, and Good Behavior (TNT).

I couldn't watch the whole episode because I was so livid that he would go back for the dog! Like wtf man. I get going back in if it was a kid but it's a dog, awful but true. Your kids would have gotten over losing the dog way better than you. Watching the second half today

@808love: Crock pot -- how would they not unplug the thing before going to bed is beyond me.
nectarine / 2288 posts
@irene: yeah this was also stupid to me. He made sure it was turned off. Who doesn't also just unplug it?!

@wrkbrk: I missed it too
I thought I would cry so hard. I just didn't. The only show where I REALLY cried all the time was Parenthood. This is Us is good and sad sometimes and I occasionally cry, but not nearly as much as Parenthood!
pomelo / 5084 posts
@winniebee: Agree! The only show that I really cried watching was Parenthood. Of course, I watched it while I was pregnant so could have been that. Haha.

I know people are mad that he went back in for the dog but I couldn’t imagine not trying to save my dog, hearing him barking and knowing he was burning to death! I think I might honestly go back in to try to save him if I knew my kids and spouse were safe. I know it’s crazy and irrational but that furry turd is family to me.
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
I do understand going back for the dog. I do not understand packing random family memories in a pillowcase (which were presumably scattered all around the house?!) I think they had him get the memory stuff so that we couldn't hate Kate and/or blame her entirely for his death.

I now I’m the worst, but I was dry eyed. I do love how they play with the timelines to show Randall in the future.
I guess it was not a suprise and I new it was going to happen, I just did not know the how. I did think Mandi Moore’s acting was very good.
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
Agree Mandy Moore acting was great. When she took the bite out of the candy bar....man, so good.

@winniebee: funny. That was my favorite part. It just felt well written.

@Foodnerd81: I love this theory. It’s like his body gave him a heart attack effectively sacrificing his life in order to save his family from a fire. Such a “Jack” thing to do. Also, since he died of a massive heart attack, I think his death was imminent regardless of the fire. The stress on his body from the fire just brought it on sooner. So it’s no one’s fault including his or Kate’s.
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@thunderstorm: yeah, I would like Kate to find out he was dying regardless so she could move on.
persimmon / 1481 posts
Last thing I’m gonna add that I was annoyed about was when he woke up Rebecca and told her to get dressed and put shoes on....wtf
