wow. i don't think this is gonna hold up, but i've never heard of a judge changing a first name because they disapproved before!

I think it is so inappropriate of that judge to do that just because of her own religious beliefs, drives me batty.

Yeah it's crazy. I just saw that on CNN. Approve of the name or not there are far worse names out there anyway!!

I think the mother will win her appeal. The couple wasn't even in court because of the child's first name! I've never heard of a judge just changing a child's name like that. The part that bugs me the most is the reasoning that the "The word Messiah is a title and it's a title that has only been earned by one person and that one person is Jesus Christ." So, it's okay for people to name their kids Jesus, but not Messiah?

@mrsjazz: agree. Even as a Christian I think this is absurd! Especially considering the article states is a fast rising name... So then if they have to change this baby's name, they should change all of them, or none of them. It's a double standard. And even as a Christian myself I don't find that baby name offensive! Not like it matters if I'm offended anyway- they have a parental right to name their child what they wish.
The only time I could see mandating a name change is if it is something like a racial/derogatory slur or perhaps swear words...

The judge was out of line changing the baby's name.
@mrs. bird: Did the father want Martin as the first name?

Why does it not surprise me that this is in TN? Oy. We're moving back there in a couple weeks (work move), and while I'm glad to be near family again. I do NOT want to go there. (I'm an atheist, so being somewhere like that is incredibly stressful.)
The mother had better win her appeal! And if all possible she should sue. That is absolutely absurd. Judges have NO right to impose their own religious beliefs on others. This is unconstitutional and just plain wrong. Do I dislike the name, and agree that it will wind up causing the kid some issues? Yes. But almost any name can be twisted by bullies, and that wasn't even the reasoning the judge gave for the ruling. I would be livid!
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@mrsjazz: I don't agree with the judge, but I'm guessing the reasoning is that Jesus is a name, where messiah is a title? Like queen vs Elizabeth? Same holds true for Mohammed, I assume.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: They were in court because the mother and father couldn't agree on the child's LAST name.

Yeeeeah this isn't all that far from me. Still puzzled as to how I ended up in the Bible Belt...

He's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy! (someone tell me they get this Monty Python reference?)

@mrsjazz: In Latin America Jesus is a perfectly acceptable name

@Mrs. Yoyo: We'll be in Nashville. Might have to plan a meetup at some point!

@Foodnerd81: Marshall, Major, Duke, Earl, even Emmanuel are all names that are also titles.

@Foodnerd81: I guess that's her reasoning, but it still doesn't make sense to me.
If my next child is a boy, I'm naming him Mr. President.

@mrsjazz: I met a baby once named Prince Yo'highness. Sadly, I think he had some challenges that would make it hard to live up to his name
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
@TemperanceBrennan: oh wow. And the judge acted as King Solomom. What a way to insert herself!
bananas / 9628 posts
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: my understanding is that they were fine with his first name but the parents were disagreeing on the last name of the child.
@Foodnerd81: my DH has a title on his birth certificate as one of his first names since there is no place to use a title name, but it's not a religious one. it starts with a P and is also used by michael jackson's sons. i have seen some CRAZY names that aren't names, not even real words, so while i agree that jesus is a name vs a title, like you, i still don't agree with the judges argument that titles can't be names- even if it is her belief that jesus christ is the messiah.

@mrs. bird: So your husband really is royalty in his family's home country?!

@Mrs. Jacks: Oh my. That is super unfortunate. My stepdad's name is Prince. Is Yo'highness the middle name? Or was that all one full first name?
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@mrsjazz: Oh no. First name. I think the middle name was Tyrone or something. Personally, I thought the apostrophe made the name.
I mean I get it, people name their kids in the hope that they live up to the moniker, but that one was a toughie!
bananas / 9628 posts
@Mrs. Jacks: well, in a sense, but titles are often bought there so they aren't as rare as they are in other parts of the world. he is the son of a chief, who was the son of a chief and the first born son of a chief is usually given the P title followed by other names. i call DH by his P name though because it's what his friends call him, sometimes i call him by his two first names, but not often.

Messiah ranked 387 in 2012. There are a lot of other babies out there with that name! I think (hope) that she'll win her appeal!

I think this judge should be fired, or at least suspended for a good period of time. She is so out of line I can't even believe it. Religion has NO place in the court system, and for a judge she has extremely poor judgment.
GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts
A government official ordering a family to take an action because it conflicts with the official’s religious belief certainly qualifies as a violation of the Constitution, so I can't imagine the mother won't win her appeal.
bananas / 9628 posts
@FutureMrsMcK: i have no doubt her ruling is going out the window as soon as soon as they hear the mother's appeal!
GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts
@mrs. bird: I also think the judge has huge cajones for thinking she could try to get away with doing something like this!
pomegranate / 3577 posts
@mrsjazz: LOL!
@Mrs. Jacks: I know a KingJames. (All one word.) I also know a Dodge Ram. I know a few Southerners who would be *very* offended at that!
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@TemperanceBrennan: @mrs. bird: oh I totally disagree with the judge! I'm only trying to figure out her reasoning, even if it is total bs that will surely be overturned!

I heard this story on the radio this morning. Legally the judge was wrong to do that, but honestly I cant understand why she wants to name her child Messiah.
bananas / 9628 posts
@Mrsbells: she said she liked how it sounded with her other children's names- micah and mason.
pear / 1998 posts
@Foodnerd81: Oh, I didn't think you agreed - I was just trying to point out how her logic was obviously flawed!
