I really want to be able to share hoots while social networking... But I've been really nervous since someone stole my daughter's photos and tried to pass her off as her child. It freaked me out!
So I rarely post a FB photo (unless we are tagged) and am not on Instagram. Sometimes I feel silly for it, and then something like this happens...

That's so bizarre. It's also why my Instagram is set to private and I only let people I know (including hb ppl) follow me. And I never post anything I would be embarrassed for people to see- but let's face it, I'm way past the drunken party photo stage at this point.

I thought there was a big issue a while ago because instagram changed their agreement to make it so that Instagram themselves owns the rights to all photos posted. I'm surprised Instagram isn't suing this dude.

What the?! I'm sorry someone did that to you! My SIL posts pictures of my kid on FB (I deactivated my account long ago), and I debate on whether to ask her to stop.

@Mrs. Coral: My bro and SIL are both not on social media by design. So I never post pics of their daughter because I figure if they aren't doing it, I shouldn't. But my SIL's sister posts pics of my niece all the time and I really struggle with whether or not to say something to my brother about it. I don't want to look like a crazy person, but if they don't know it's happening and wouldn't like it, I hate to keep it from them.

That is insane! I have my personal IG set to private and I only approve people I know. It's also why I don't share H's face on my public IG account for sewing.

@andthewildones: It's so disheartening. I hate to be suspicious and closed, but after C's picture was posted all over someone else's twitter as her daughter (and getting all kinds of comments), I decided it wasn't paranoia... but just being careful.
I don't know what the right answer is to keeping our kids safe?!
I do know that I don't like that FB and IG have all rights to any photos we post!

@Mrs. Jacks: set the instagram to private, that way only the people that you know and approve can see it. I actually find instagram privacy settings to be much more airtight than Facebook so I mostly post pictures there and not much at all on FB.

@Meowkers: A very kind lurker on WB saw the photos in her twitter feed and recognized that it was my daughter. She contacted me and I found the offending Twitter feed. It took some wrangling, but working with Twitter we were able to get her shut down. My family wasn't this woman's first target. She had done this before. Elaborate stories about what she was doing each day... totally creepy!

@Mrs. Jacks: so creepy. Sort of related: After I got married I randomly came across a vendor on Etsy using a photo of me in my wedding dress to sell a knock-off of my dress. It totally creeped me out and I demanded that she remove the photo.

@Mrs. Jacks: maybe I'm just too skeptical of a person but the lady who says her photo sold for 90000 seems to be the only source of that price and seems to be regularly involved in scams and drama. Seems to me like it's probably a creative advertising avenue for her company.

My IG profile is set to private and I am very selective about who I accept. I need to clean out my Facebook friends too.
When I had Gold I always had a policy to only post pictures of LO in Gold threads. Who "owns" pictures on HB?

I meant that the two of them were working together, not that it was just about price. She's sued people for less so it's strange she's not suing him. The way instagram is set up she could, the argument is that he added a comment underneath to make it his own. But by using that logic it's not at all a problem unique to Facebook or instagram but any photo that's on the Internet can be changed to make it 'art' and have different copyright and ownership.

@daniellemybelle: That's a good question. Maybe Mr. Bee will weigh in. What I do know, is that he was amazing at helping me get things back to normal. I guess that's why I feel pretty safe here, because I know that there are other people looking out for me and my interests, which you can't say in too many places on the internet.
But that article did remind me of the conversation you and I had on the boards yesterday

@Mrs. Jacks: no idea. There was a lot that didn't make sense to me about her story though. But whether it's true or not what Prince did to claim 'ownership' of the photo is not instagram or FB specific but any picture.
I'm cautious about what I put up on those sites and treat them as more frequent Christmas cards. I'm way more cautious about these sort of public sites though where I have even less control of privacy. You just seem to be the flip of that so I guess I'm trying to pick your brain to understand what makes you skeptical about FB and Instagram and more trusting of HB.

I was just thinking that I should stop being so cautious about not having the family's photos on Facebook. Never mind. This is a great reminder about reasons not to do that.

@Maysprout: sorry I should have been clearer. With IG and FB, they own the rights to your photos as soon as you upload them. Whereas here, I feel like it's my photo, I've got the backup of the Bee family and I can take issues into my own hands. Does that make sense?

@Mrs. Jacks: what would the back up of the bee family do? I'm not trying to be snarky but Im not making the link between the article you posted and instagrams terms. Instagram can use your photos, but they don't claim to own them. The lady could try to sue him still. The argment the 'artist' is making is that he made minor changes to publicly available photos and now can sell them, it wasn't a matter of Instagram ownership or not.

@Mrs. Jacks: That's pretty crazy! Facebook makes me nervous for kid pictures and I don't even have instagram.
@Truth Bombs: That's a tricky situation. I feel like I would want to know and would be quite upset if someone else was posting pictures of my child (who is not here yet) on the internet. At least you are smart and realize they probably wouldn't appreciate it. My sister has facebook and doesn't post kid pictures and she lost a friend over it because her friend posted a picture of my sister's children. I think that is pretty ridiculous and the friend probably wasn't that great of a friend to lose over something so silly.

I have a rule that any photos of LO on Facebook have to be clothed - no bath or naked photos. My mom posted a photo the other day on Facebook of me holding LO in the pool, with me in a bikini and LO naked. We had a talk, and while she didn't seem to get while I was upset, she took it down.

unfortunately social media is one of the only ways for my family to see pictures of the baby.I read an article about young girls who will play with pictures of babies from Instagram. They pretend the babies are their own and make whole fake families.usually these are young girls aged 10 to 15. I thought that was pretty strange, but I guess the risk is worth the connections to friends and family to me.

@Mrs. Jacks: you feel your photos are safer on here, a public site then on Facebook or Instagram where you can limit the audience? Granted, there's no way to guarantee the intended audience are the only people to see the pictures when you put them online, but I would exercise a lot more caution on a public site like this. Even if the bee family is willing to back you up and remove a photo, Once it's out there, it's out there even after being removed. All the bee support won't stop someone from re-uploading/using/sharing a photo they "stole" before it was removed.
I think the moral of the story is you need to be cautious with any picture You post online and be sure to lock down your accounts and only share with people you know and trust.
Anything can be saved, downloaded, screenshotted, emailed, etc.

@Maysprout: when I had my problem, I felt I had a real person who had my back. With those large social media corporations you just send a random email into the ethers and hope someone will intervene on your behalf. In the meantime, with the knowledge and expertise of someone i can have real time contact with, I knew exactly what steps I needed to take.
Yes it's a risk, but I do try to be thoughtful about what I share even here. You'll notice that most of my blog posts don't have a ton of pictures.
I see the inconsistency in the logic... But I do feel safer here. I also feel like people in this community look out for each other, as someone from WB did for me. Maybe that's misguided as well?
It's so hard! But I hear what you are saying.

I get grilled all of the time about not posting pictures of my LO's face online and it's exactly because people love to "role play" or even pretend to be someone else with pictures of other's children. It's happened to a few blog friends of mine so I decided not to share pictures of her face on my social media accounts. My social media is open due to the nature of my business. Sorry it happened to you!
