Took DD in for a suspected UTI this morning, she wasn't able to give us a sample (we have get one at home and bring it back) but he checked her out and noticed some labial adhesions that may be causing some of her symptoms. He prescribed her an estrogen cream. I don't know much about this but some websites say they can go away on their own. If her cultures come back negative would the cream be necessary? I don't really know. Any experience is welcome.

My daughter had one, it was on the more extreme side, and I did end up using the estrogen cream. I was hesitant, as I usually err on the side of natural medecine, and dislike using anything hormone related for myself, much less my infant.
Our pediatrician said that it can go away over time in some cases, but we saw no improvement from my daughter's 4 month check up to her 6 month. Basically, the adhesion can cause urine to pool, which can cause reoccurring infections. It can also make sitting cross legged uncomfortable.
When I decided to use the cream, it went away in about a week and half.

One of my daughters had one that seemed to come on after she had a horrible diaper rash. It was fairly significant, but there was still an opening for urine to pass (and wasn't bothering her).
Our pediatrician's advice was that if we used cream to open it, it would probably come and go until she hit puberty. We opted to leave it alone, and it returned to normal on its own after a number of months (ie a long time).

@PinkElephant: thanks for sharing. I'm thinking I may wait to see if DD does indeed have a UTI before I decide to use any kind of hormonal cream on her. -
LO1 had one she was born but it went away by her first birthday I believe. Her ped actually pointed it out to me and said it was nothing to worry about - although considering I didn't notice it until he showed me, I imagine it was minor.

DD had one, no uti's but ped caught it at her 8 mos apt I believe. we used the cream for about 2 weeks after baths (2-3 times a week, so 4-6 times total). it cleared up and we stopped and no issues since and she's now 2.5

@Mrs. Sunshine: Yeah, if it had been any less extreme, I would have just waited. Hers was totally zipped up if that makes sense. She has never liked to sit, and I wonder if part of that is that it was uncomfortable for her. We used the cream 2 months ago and have had no issues since.

My youngest had them for a while, the doctor kept pushing the estrogen cream, but I felt uncomfortable and waited to see if they would resolve-- they did.

My daughter had a minor labial adhesion, but it went away on its own by the time she was maybe 14-15 months?

Mine had a labial fusion and I used the estrogen cream to open it up. I don't like hormones either, but I'm not monkeying around with UTIs. There's research that once you get one UTI, you are more likely to get a second and I want to put that off as long as possible.

@Grace: good point. I looked again last night and I'm seeing all the parts I'm supposed to see. I don't think it's closed up but I'm not a doctor. If her cultures come back positive this morning then I'll do the cream too.
