We might be in the market for a laptop...ugh. Was hoping to get my DSLR instead this year but isn't looking that way.
DH is a college student and his classes are now kind of expecting a laptop which we don't have. Well, we do but it's ancient and not something he could use.
He's a student so it has to be light and small enough to put in his backpack, fast enough to use in class and under $500.

@pui: yeah, he's in a lot of geology/petroleum engineering classes and they said yesterday 'pull out your laptop and bring up google earth' he was like....uhhhhhhh..........

I love MacBooks but def out of your price range.
How about the Microsoft Surface? It's definitely super portable and acts as tablet & laptop. I think Surface 2 starts at $450 or something like that.

This one is nice. It looks nice, is very thin/small and actually has pretty good specs, definitely perfect for using Google Earth or writing notes. Also it still has Windows 7 which is kinda nice. I'd personally choose this one. It is actually extremely comparable to a Macbook Air which would cost you over $1k.

This one is also good. It's similar spec wise (but has Windows 8). It is a bit bigger/heavier and has a DVD drive. It may also have better battery life.

if he's only using it for word processing and web browsing, we have a chrome book for mr. bird to do those on & it's super cheap (his is a samsung and was $250, there are others that at slightly more or less, most between $200-$300) and pretty decent. not EVERY site is supported (mr. bird has never had this happen, but there's a math program, ixl, and some of the math games weren't supported by chrome, and some coupons i can't print with it because their security isn't supported by chrome, but mr. bird has never had an occasion where he couldn't use it for something). might be something to look into for a low priced laptop.
i looooove my macbook pro, but that's beyond the price point and probably more than he needs for web browsing and word processing.

ours are just old enough they don't handle the new programs out there. So sad. Haha!
