Our basement right now serves as a play room, guest room, and living space. We joke that it's our little one bedroom apartment down there-- it's got a queen sized bed, two couches, a tv, a desk, and tons of toys. Haha.

But it's weirdly shaped so each area is its own little nook, so that might not work for you. Our living room is split in two-- living room and play room. The playroom side has those big colored foam tiles on the floor, and that really separates the two spaces (and provides a safe play surface). Could that help?
