My 5yo kid has been super into building lego sets. He got a lot of them over the holidays, and will spend HOURS at a time working on them.
I think this is great, but obviously we wont be spending $30-40 / week on lego sets once he burns through his stash. How do we keep him in supply without spending a ton of money? Are there any tricks for this? Maybe sell old sets and buy second hand? Or is there a way to disassemble and repurpose old sets?

Do you have any of the Creator 3 in 1 sets? They come with instructions for making 3 different things with the same pieces, so lots of taking apart and putting back together. My coworker also says her kid loves the Lego idea books to go with the classic sets.

@JennyPenny: oh good ideas. The 3 in 1 look good. We dont have the idea book, but I'm putting it on his wishlist. I'm not sure if he would enjoy building without the step by step instructions at this point, but hopefully soon

My kids LOVE lego sets as well but they will build them take them apart and rebuild them over and over again. When they got through their stash we put them away for awhile and they ask for them and rebuild them again. Or they will build a few of them and then play with their ‘little town’ they made or whatever. We talked with our in laws about doing a lego swap some time too.

My son has tons of Legos, all of mine from childhood, and now all the gifts he’s received over the years. He will build a set and then modify it how he wants, take it apart and do it all again later. He does a lot of creative building too (without instructions). Where we live Legos are super expensive (3-4x more than in the US or Europe), so we don’t buy them from the store anymore. I did manage to buy 2 sets second hand recently and got an amazing deal on them.

DS will be 6 this spring and has so much LEGO. He loves it! He has been able to follow the directions for a while and is just now starting to use his imagination to modify or build his own things. Classic LEGO sets are good for your own ideas plus they have a few things to build in the directions. We had found a store that sold by the brick. DH got him some pieces like a boat hull, plane engines.
DS also likes to just okay with the sets and sometimes break and rebuild. If you go to the LEGO website you can download directions.
I’d try and find LEGO second hand for cheap if you can.

So I have a LEGO obsessed 5 yo as well. When he takes things apart we like to keep them in seperate zip lock bags with the instructions if possible so he can rebuild it at a later point. Also he has started to really like LEGO technic where every set builds two different constructions.
