Ha, well I guess that is a bit longer than Yahoo can expect to have with the CEO taking such a short maternity leave

If only there was a location close to me! haha I don't know if I'm smart enough, but I would love to try! I work with their paid placement now for my job, so I have a little inside knowledge to the company. That would be amazing to be off that long!

I've always wanted to work for Google ... not sure what I would do there either, though!

Ok. I am going to stalk Google for job listings. Can I put that I'm great at "Google research" on my resume?

How novel-- women figure out the work life balance better when they have a little more time and money to do so! Good for Google.

My husband actually works there, and will be getting 10 weeks paid paternity leave!! Looks like they treat the guys pretty well too =P

They were talking of building an office in my city!

I knew I always loved that Google!
@mrsjazz: Only if I can tell them I used "google scholar" searches to get me through my grad school thesis!

@Emilie: Cool! I was wondering if they had paternity leave. That's really nice.

my friend's husband works at microsoft and they not only have a cadillac insurance plan - they pay for NOTHING out of pocket - but he also gets a ton of paternity leave.

I wish Google had an office near me... I researched working for them, but they didn't have any online work, and I'm too far away from any of their offices. Sigh.

@TurtleDoves: lol same here! i graduated thanks to google scholar.

Both my brother AND SIL work there... totally jealous. They got the whole week of the 4th off (no PTO required), get crazy vacation time, amazing benefits all around. Free cafeteria onsite (run by Wolfgang Puck or something?) etc etc. They don't buy groceries because they eat all 3 meals there (together) for free. Grrrrr.

we are totally jealous of anyone who works at google... The perks are unbeatable! my DH did land an interview or two with them, but it didn't work out we'd both love to work there!!

seriously... this is sick.
amazing.
A company like that that treats their employees right has a higher retention rate, happier and more productive employees and as a result a higher production and more efficient workforce.
I was just talking to DH saying he should apply. He has a degree in statistics and mathematics. He totally has the brain for it.

@Coco Bee: Yep - and they also want their employees to feel happy about staying at Google working late hours, not feeling the need to leave the building for breaks, etc. You get happier people + more work.

I think I'd rather buy my own groceries than work more than 40 hours/week, though

I'm a little jealous, I work for a tech company, but not one that's all that revolutionary. But just so you guys know, Google is not the end all be all for work/life balance - they have those perks so that when you're working you spend 12+ hours a day there. I have a couple friends that work there, and they basically work for all of their waking hours.
cantaloupe / 6206 posts
@blackbird: Haha. I don't know that they do work that much more than 40, actually, but the culture is definitely not one of 9-5. Meaning if they need to stay to finish something, they stay, no b!$#ing.

I'm in the biotech industry and I sometimes work 50 hours a week so the perks at Google are great! I would love to work less than 40 hours but in my line of work, it can be impossible. I knew my hours would be long when I was in college.
Good for them for thinking of their employees first!

meh, I'm in PR and work more than 40 hours a week semi-regularly. At least 1 week a month, I'd say.

I used to work at a Big 4, and their maternity benefits were very similar. But agree with those that have said the work/life balance is usually the trade-off. But, I don't know, once you're in that type of industry it is generally just known that you'll work more than 40 hours.
When can it be generally acceptable to work normal hours and have great benefits? (I know I'm dreaming here)..

I think it's a step in the right direction...I really think the primary onus for extended maternity leaves and day care is with employers, not the government. I would love to see more companies realizing that their most important assets are the ones that walk out the door every night.
