We have been using just a regular small garbage can with a lid for diaper disposal in DD room. Up until a couple of months ago, this was no problem because DD was breastfed and didn't poop that often, therefore the room didn't stink up because we rarely had a dirty diaper in there. Now, with DD eating more solids, she is pooping more often and they are smelling worse.
We are considering buying a diaper pail to aid with the smell. My question to you is whether or not it is worth it. I had a friend tell me it was pointless. So what do you think? Do you use one? Do you like it? Which brand do you have? How costly is it?

We love our UBBI- you can use any garbage bag. They are spendy but work.

Dumping the poop in the toilet helps, but get pee pee diapers get stinky fast. I've realized I need to empty the trash can much more often. I ordered a large wet bag to hang from her changing table with the plan to take out the trash at least every other day.

We just have a Diaper Genie, but we love it! I mean, it smells when I open it to put something in, but other than that, it contains everything great!

We also have the Dekor Plus, and love it. We cloth diapered for the first year and for the first few months just used the bin that the cloth diaper service gave us but like you said, after a while opening and closing it made the whole room stinky. We actually bought two Dekors, one for cloth diapers and one for wipes/garbage, and it was great. Since he started daycare and they won't use cloth we've stuck one in storage but kept using the other one - we actually keep it in the hall and it contains the smells no problem.

Another Ubbi fan. I had a diaper genie but hated buying the stupid refills. We saved a lot of $$ by getting an Ubbi where you can use a regular plastic bag.

We have the ubbi and I love it! No smell (only when you open it, which is normal), and normal garbage bags, and you can lock it--key for when LOs start getting into everything.

Just for reference, you can buy cloth bags for the Dekor - I guess it's one step more work than the Ubbi using regular bags but you can just dump the diapers out of the cloth bags into a standard garbage bag and throw the cloth in the laundry, so you're not having to buy the refills.

I think that there are a lot of good options, but that an actual diaper pail is essential. We have a Diaper Genie and it has worked well for us.

We have a two dekor plus diaper pails and I think it's great. I bought ours used. I think $40 for two pails. It works great for us and our cloth diapers.
We use one for cloth diapers and other for regular trash. I love the one for regular trash that you can tie of the amount of bag you want. Hardly any bag waste.
You can use regular trash bags with it if you don't want to pay for refills.

@erinbaderin: I know Dekor sells cloth bags but it fits Planet wise diaper liners and I think I might have a regular diaper liner (not from Planet wise). They all work well with my Dekor.

Yes I def saved $ in the long run.
Diaper genie was $35, and each refill was 7$. I needed a new refill every couple of weeks (as they got older it seemed like I was changing the thing all the time). If you use it for two years that's over $300 in just the refills!
Ubbi was an upfront cost of $75 but no need to buy refills. Amazing. I got sick of paying for refills so got an Ubbi when I had my dd2. Its already paid for itself.

@schubr03: DS is 18 months and so far I'd say the Ubbi is definitely worth it, between being able to use regular trash bags and being able to lock it if needed. I think the upfront cost is something like $80 (may be able to use BBB coupon - not sure though) but in my mind, there's no extra cost after that bc I'm already buying regular trash bags anyway. (I guess there's a marginal extra cost but I don't have time for that kind of math!) I anticipate us being able to use it for as many kids as we have, so $80 divided out over the potential 7 or more years we'll have kids in diapers seems like a pretty minimal cost to me. Plus, I like that it's cute and matches the decor in the nursery

I chose "use and love". I have the Munchkin diaper pail with arm & hammer. It works really well and it's pretty cheap ($40 I think). The only time we get a whiff is if it's pretty full and we open it or when we change the bag. But even then it's bearable. The room never just stinks because we have a diaper pail.
We had an Ubbi because everyone said they were great and I figured more $$$ meant it would be. But I was really disappointed. There's no mechanism to block the older diapers when you open it, it's basically a garbage can with a lid. I spent the $80 and gave it away after a week.Oh and we definitely started flushing his poop lately (when not too messy) and it has helped TREMENDOUSLY. We barely even smell anything when we change the bag now. I think it's also teaching him where the poop should go because he watches me dump it and we shut the lid together, flush, and wash hands.

We use the Munchkin diaper pail as well. Love it because it keeps the smell contained although it smells awful when opened (and full), I just shut it as fast as possible.

Poop smells, there is no escaping that fact and I am always so surprised when people don't smell the stink in their kid's rooms. We had a fancy one that used those bags that make a diaper sausage and it reeked when we opened it.
I think the best thing is to flush poop when you can, and then dispose of diapers in smaller bags that you take out to the trash every other day or so.

@schubr03: I love our Ubbi. We do 90/10 cloth/disposable and we've been using the Ubbi with a wet bag insert since day one for the cloth diapers and a little step trash can for the disposables and wipes. I actually finally bit the bullet and got a second Ubbi for trash last week because I liked it so much and it does such a better job at containing the smell!

One thing on the re-fills if you go that way... I find that one ring of it lasts us a good amount of time! I stocked up before DD was born and 15 months later I still haven't had to re-buy!

We've never had a legit diaper pail. When we CD for our first, I used a stainless steel trashcan with a wetbag. When we switched to disposables, I just threw each diaper out in our big trashcan outside. We live in a house and the big can is about 10 feet away from the back door, and it doesn't rain hardly ever, so it's not a big deal to get it out of the house completely.

Used to have a diaper genie, hated it and threw it away after DD1. now we use regular trash bags in a flip top trashcan and I think it contains the smell. I will say I usually take poopy diapers outside regardless.

We have a diaper genie and it's fine. Nothing special and when we don't take it out often enough of course it stinks, but much better than a regular garbage can. We buy the refills from Amazon or Costco. Even if you don't need special refills you are still paying for whatever bag you use unless it's a grocery store bag.

We didn't use one with our first, but I plan to get the Ubbi to use with the baby I'm currently baking :). My sister has it and loved it (she uses it with cloth diapers though)

We have an Ubbi in which we use regular trash bags & a Dekor with their cloth diaper bag. Both contain the smell pretty well, though the nursery has been a little more smelly recently (I assume from just when I open the can) so I've been dumping the poop in the toilet when possible.

We have 3 diaper genies in our house. Two for diapers, one for dog poop bags. I think they do a pretty good job of containing the smells. Our garbage is just too far away to put it in the big can for every poopy diaper.

We didn't have one until 9 months. That was fine if we took the diapers out daily, but even then, it was pretty stinky once solids started. We then got a Diaper Genie. It contained the stink well enough, but it went through refills really quickly and broke after 6 months. We've had the Dekor Plus for 2 years (through the addition of our second and potty training of our first) now and are happy with it. The refills last so much longer. I think we change it every 6 months or so? It does stink when you open it, even though we flush poop. I think daily take-outs are the only work around for that. We keep it in the bathroom and have no issues.

I have an ubbi in LO's room, I use a normal kitchen garbage bag, but I also double bag the diapers with grocery store plastic bags that I save. I empty the bin out every night and there is no smell in the room. Every few days I give it a good wipe down with anti bacterial wipes, and take it outside for a spray of anti-bac scent spray.

We have a cheapie diaper pail in our upstairs laundry room, it sorta stinks like poo, but we only change it once a week, so in that respect (not having to make a garbage run daily) i love it.
