I am looking for a new place and want to be able to walk LO to school (she is a baby but I am thinking ahead)
What is the longest distance you would think it practical to walk? Very cold and very hot weather unfortunately!

We walk 1 1/2 miles to preschool right now and he is 2 1/2 years old. I would probably go 2 miles away for elementary school and 3 miles away from high school.

@Greentea: You have to be willing to walk twice as much (I walk 3 miles a day) but he can do it at 2 1/2 years old.

@brownie: I think I could do it! 4 miles... that is cool he does it and he is so young!

I'm not sure about distance but I used to wall my little sister to school. It was about a 20 minute walk. I hated it! I'm starting to think about school too and she's just a little over a year old.

Is a bike an option? We're considering a school for Olive next year that's pretty far away, and the plan is to bike there with her riding in a bike seat!

Our elementary school is literally down the street, I could stand on the front lawn and watch my son walk to the school.
For us it isn't so much distance as he wouldn't have to cross any main roads.

@katsupgirl: I think it would take us about that long with a little kid and traffic... bummers you hated it! I had to walk myself since I was 6 and I HATED IT! I will be there for her

@mrbee: oooooouu that's a cool idea. Much faster and I would feel like a special messenger only my message would be my daughter that is something to consider... and there isn't traffic along the lake...

We walk 1 mile to preschool; it's a good walk but I wouldn't want to go much farther than that mostly because of the time it takes in the morning.

@Baby Boy Mom: good point! I am place hunting and just found another that is exactly 1 mile... that will definitely take up a bit of my day... maybe I can walk the dog while I'm at it

@Greentea: I was probably just a grumpy teenager why I hated it. My sisters still complain about me being mean on the walk.
If you have pretty decent weather the walk wouldn't be too bad and creates great bonding and memories.

a mile is really far and that would be my limit. right now we walk 8-10 blocks for Charlie and Olive's school and it is far in the cold!
@brownie: wow impressive! that would take olive like 3 hours because she has to touch everything!

@Mrs. Bee: there isn't much to touch. We walk past the school which has a couple of stumps, cross the street and see the blue stop signy . Then to the stop light and walk next to the desert. Then another stop light and we spend a lot of time on the last 1/2 mile as we walk down the grass (since we don't have any).
